Re: National Agricultural Classification Survey
I have received a survey (manditory) from the Dept. of Ag. every year since I applied for a Farm ID #. If I forget to send it in, they call and take the survey over the phone. It is mostly about my bees but also has questions about the other things that might be on the property like fruit trees, berries, etc.
I am not sure if this is the same as the one listed above. I just know I get it every year in Dec./Jan.

Amy, I did not get the incubator. The bottom tray was missing and apparently not available from GQF. I would have had to make one or had someone else do it. The hatching tray with cover was there.

I called about another one but the guys wife had changed her mind about selling it.

I went this afternoon and picked up a wine cooler. I am going to try to build one out of it.
I think all I need to do is disconnect the compressor, add a heat source ( light or heat tape) and a thermostat to control it. Since the wine cooler did not have a fan, I will put a couple of small fans in it.
I have one more day of work to finish my breeder pens in the chicken coop for the silkies and maybe I can put my mind to work on figuring out how to build the incubator.

I am looking forward to Sat. I may take a few silkies to sell. I have to decide what to part with.

Well I may have to set up a delivery for you!! I like field trips!! And you have some things I really want to see sooooooooo bad!!

I wanted some Dorking chicks but I won't be going to the show.

I have a market Saturday, I'll be selling eggs.....again.

So over the last 2 sunny days off...which took 3 weekends to get...my DH built me this (pic below)for my D'uccles...

So today I took the smaller version that had no built on nest boxes and vinyl siding ( he put it on legs with a floor monday morn before he left for the week...it was on ground with open bottom) and I ripped the siding off,put wood siding on...put vinyl flooring in,added nest boxes, sand, and caught scrappy and his gal! Then I moved Dixies Sumatras into scrappy's big coop!! I mean they are just a teeny pair of OEGB and the others needed the space more! And I only bled once and only fell once(different times) It was a good morning!!It now looks like this only a foot less long and half a foot less deep!! I am gonna wire the bottoms for a small run and let the Duccles take turns there during day. I have got to get back to free ranging but I hear the hawk everytime I am outside!! I let my big birds out but my teenies I worry over!!

This is a very nice coop! Wish I had about 4 or 5 of them!

Nice Coop!!!!
With yesterday being so nice, we finally were able to move some of the orphington pullets into the big coop. I really haven't had much time with these girls but when I went to pick them up, they were very calm. They actually put their head in my chest. Such sweet babies. They are huge. I purchased the eggs from Hijinck on BYC. They are turning out beautiful.

Every morning at the butt crack of dawn I get on here ( because I am at work) and I get to catch up on everyone's posts. The only problem is y'all are hardly on here while I am.

I don't have much to say anyway as I am still new to so much of it. But I just wanted to let y'all know that I am here and I am reading/lurking just waiting to chime in.

Hope everyone has a great Leap Day!

Oh and yesterday I picked up some new chicks. 5 Buff Orps and 1 RIR. Next weekend when my guy comes home we are going to go pick up two more, (I am letting him pick those two so he doesn't feel left out.) They are soooo cute. I cannot wait for them to be big enough so I can put them with the ducklings.

Biltmore is beautiful. I have not gone to the winery because I love wine way too much and it hates me. We did go to the farm area, saw all the animals and took a few photos of chickens. We took the roof top tour for the house too. Bad decision for the end of Dec. It was 22 degrees that day and the wind was whipping. It was miserable being on the top of the house listening to this poor woman have to tell us all the neat stuff. Our ears almost fell off, it was so cold! LOL

Hope you are feeling better. Love these warm days.
If and when you have some eggs or chicks to sell from these orpingtons, I would love to get some.
Orpingtons are wonderful birds. I need some new bloodline for mine.

dixiebeast I will decide if and what to take tomorrow. They will be pet quality except for a couple of partridge.

Farm ID......I do not know a lot about it. They have been in use for 80+ years. I think if you apply for any farm/crop loan or program you have to have a farm id#. I use it on the form I fill out to sell at the State Farmers Market in Greenville. (The only thing I have ever used it for.) When I went to the Farm Services Agency/Dept. of Agriculture office in Greenville (near the Clemson Ext. office), I found out that this property had an old number. They split our 12 acres off and gave me a new number. This whole area had been farmed 80 years ago. I have talked with two of the daughters of the farmer. They are in their late 70's-early 80's. They told me about carry food across the fields for their family's lunch.

On a side note, SC has a "right to farm law" (which includes beekeepers in the law). I hope my rights to farm are protected a little better since I am identified as a farm and not just a hobby.
Who knows.

My new chicken area is coming along. I'm totally shocked by how handy my sweet husband is now. Guess owning a farm will do that to you! We have seven new runs. Still trying to figure out a coop for each one but in the meantime, the first one is done and I'm using my larger chicken tractor in it. We moved my Wheaten Marans out of the laying flock and back into their own domain. My roo Pierre thought he was hot stuff hanging out with his ladies, and only his ladies, again. We hope to finish the second one today because I have an order of Polish coming tomorrow for Colin! And they are gorgeous! We're getting a Chocolate Cuckoo boy, a frizzle Chocolate Cuckoo girl, a frizzle WC black girl, a smooth WC black girl, and a smooth WC blue girl. They are 3-5 months old. These are bantams. He has no idea! He has a calender on the wall, marking down the days until he gets his chicks (March 7th). He prays for his upcoming chicks every night. All his chicks are Standard size but we figure he can raise both sizes... just in separate coops. I hope to get them all settled while he's at school and then tell him to go look at the new run. I've almost told him so many times!

Hope those storms stay far away today! I asked Cole if he wanted to go to a chicken show this weekend. I do believe he's chickened out at the moment. Hope everyone going has a great time!
