I just have to come here and say how excited my whole family is to have 8 little bantam chicks! They are all eggs from Dixiebeast and they are just sooooo precious! They are soooo tiny and cute and so much less mess! They are pecking at each other a bunch(more than my lf ever did) which I hope calms down but otherwise they are just all soooo perfect! My boys can hardly put them down and I think they did not want to leave today for their swim meet in Columbia if they had to leave the chicks. My 10 yo had his swim team mates help him name one yesterday while he was at the meet! All the other swimmers are probably tired of hearing about the chickens! lol! The babies have even renewed the kids excitement about the bigger chickens! Just so much fun!!!
Here are 5 of the new babies! Oh and I had 8 out of 9 hatch. I am bummed the last one did not hatch because it was fully formed in the egg but its air cell was a funny shape and more on the side of the egg so maybe that was it! Still a GREAT hatch!!!! I have 4 mf d'uccles, 1 SB, 1 Cochin, and 2 gnd.

I lost my precious baby Blue Orp Anastasia this afternoon. She was fine last night. This morning, around 10, I found her lying in the run, real lethargic. It was already hot, and since it didn't get that cool last night (and she is a really heavy feathered almost 8 week old), I decided to bring her in. Lou Ann is out of town, so I was able to put her in the crate in her room and close the other animals out. I gave her some vitamins and electrolytes, and she seemed a little better. Left her standing with her head tucked under her wing.
When I went back a couple of hours later, I found her on her side, barely moving, I picked her up and her head was rolling really strange. She couldn't stand anymore. I knew then she wasn't going to make it. I held her for awhile and after 30 minutes or so she let out a small squawk, flailed her wings and actually roled out of my lap and had a seizure and then took her last breath.
I am thinking some kind of heat stroke. The babies still sleep in the large dog crate together, but Anastasia did sleep on the roost one night. I just wonder if she overheated last night. Or if some kind of bug bit her? He poop was completely normal. She pooped in the crate inside the house, making it easy for me to know.
I have cleaned their sleeping crate and bleached it out. The others seem okay tonight. I plan to check them early in the morning.
I still want a Blue Orp pullet, but the next one will have to be at least 8 weeks old. I think I am done with little chicks for awhile. This year has been a tough one after last year being so easy.
I am so sorry about Anastasia.

I have lost 5 due to heat this year. I have been running several misters everyday for the past week or so. I run the misters any day that gets above 90-92 degrees. I also have 3 fans running around the clock in the coop. The longer the heat stress continues the more they are at risk. It is just so frustrating.

Hey all I posted on here way back when first joined BYC, havn't really been on this thread since. Lots has happened. Anyway I got sort of an Issue. I have 4 chickens right now, they are about 10 weeks old right now, 2 males and 2 females(i believe).

One of the males is a smooth, the other 3 (1 cockeral and 2 pullets) are all frizzle.

They are Black bantam cochins. Looking for someone within driving distance, 30-40 min at most, that is willing to take in some pretty little birds.

here are some photos of 2 of them. shoot me a pm if your interested.

sorry if you can't really see them, they are so hard to photograph, being all black.
What real cuties! I love my Frizzles. What a shame I am so far away from you! I have 2 breeding pens and lots of little chicks running around in one pen. Gotta love the Frizzles!

So sorry to hear this, Teresa!
It has been really hot at night. I am still pouring sweat when closing up the coops after 9 pm at night.
Wish these night time temps were our day time temps!

Lost my first chick today and not sure what happened. I did change bedding Monday - went from fine to flake shavings. And I took their lamp away Monday because its been so warm outaide, but the temps fell yesterday and they seemed fine so I didn't plug it back in. Then this AM they were all huddled up in a corner, so I plugged it back in and separated them. At lunch they were all spread out and normal. Then after work one was dead and flat-ish in a corner. No obvious injuries or strange behavior. Should I have Clemson do a necropsy? Or am I over reacting (like my BF keeps saying)? I had them treated for cocci & marecks at the hatchery, so I don't give medicated feed. Any have any experience w/Clemson's lab?
