Leirob--good for you!! Yay for the catches. Has it stopped the deaths?

Patsy I have a friend in Laurens who just caught a raccoon with a live trap. I can ask her what she used. I know she used canned cat food as the bait.

Caught 3 cats and an 18 pound racoon so far. a long way away from the 60 some odd birds dead and gone.
So sorry the predators have destroyed so many of your flock! I hope capturing the cats will spook their relations and will drive them back to BBQ dumpster diving.

While we were on vacation last week, two more of our young birds began to lay, and our faithful gal produced a double-yolk egg! I imagine they thought, "OK! We'll lay. We'll lay. Just come back!" Odd as this sounds and as offended as my sons might be, being away from my feathered babies was like time apart from my children: They look so different after just a few days.

Is there anyone within a couple hours of Aiken selling silver laced wyandotte hens? I'm anxious to add to my flock, and for some reason I can't post a "wanted" classified at BYC.

I didn't realize raccoons got so big! What did you use to catch the cats & raccoon? I'm wanting to actually bring the feral tomcat from out old house here. And possible catch the raccoon that wiped out my previous hens.

And shouldn't a food place have some kind of rules about waste disposal that include not drawing vermin/nuisance creatures?

Look how red this girl is getting!!! She is starting to get wattles in, too. She is probably around 18 weeks old now. We found an egg in the run yesterday, but I don't think she is laying yet. It will not surprise me if she lays somewhere other than the nestbox at first since she is still getting used to the big girls and, along with the other two "teenagers" tries to keep her distance.

You know I use to think they were just birds until I had some! It is hard to not get attached and any time an animal dies on your watch it is hard to take. Makes you feel helpless. I hope they are able to help you if the meds don't work. I will say I have not medicated or vaccinated any of my birds. I did not even know I should. Hugs and I hope they stop dying on you!

Cpnthrfan--I am sorry you lost your self blue. What happened? Was it a baby?

no it was close to laying and i just lost a delaware last nite
