When I married my DH (a native of Louisiana), I learned a lot about how Southern people, particularly Cajuns, speak. My BIL would refer to "Earl". It took me a while to figure out that "Earl" wasn't a person, it's the lubricant used in automobiles, or that smooth liquid derived from vegetable sources such as peanuts or canola seed we Midwesterns or northerners call "oil". They'd also say, "crack that window". Really?

How about a water hose? Down there, they call it a "hose pipe". It was over a YEAR after my DH and I married that I understood ANYTHING my MIL said to me. I'd just look at her and nod, pretending I was following her conversation, until she'd stop and look at me, expecting an answer... oh, my.
