Southern 101---Explanation of all things Southern

Um, I didn't know that it was. Around here if I were to ask my friends if they wanted a coke they'd say "No, i only drink sprite (or Dr.Pepper or whatever)"

wasn't sure if it was a southern thing or a texas thing. i know that all the people here in austin who were born and raised in texas call all soda 'coke'
even the ones who only drink dr pepper.

I can attest to this. When I was in high school, we moved from Richmond VA to Charlotte NC. The kids started calling me a Yankee. Now I took that unkindly, since my parents are both from Tennessee and the rest of my kin hail from TN, GA, and AL. I reminded my namecallers that Richmond was the capital of the Confederacy during the Civil War.

Made them think, at least.
I think part of the problem is that I never got the full-on Southern twang except when visiting relatives or when really mad.

For those of you who miss the South but are transplanted to CA, Huckleberry's has decent fried catfish. My roomie nearly died when I ordered it the first time we went to the resturant - because it was 10:30 in the morning. But gosh it was nice to have catfish cooked right - battered in cornmeal.
No sweet tea or hushpuppies, though.

It's okay. South Florida doesnt really count; it is separate from what is considered the genuine South. Having grown up there exempts you. The fact that it is called "south" and is in a southernly clime is only a matter of semantics and geography.

Even Virginia is considered the upper limit of acceptability when it comes to being Dixie bred. Ask anybody who takes their Southern Heritage seriously and you will find that the bona-fide Southerner hails from one of the following:
Louisiana,
Mississippi,
Alabama,
Georgia,
South or North Carolina ,
Tennessee,
Kentucky

"Fringe Southerners" are from:
Arkansas
Virginia

Texas isn't Southern, sorry to say... it is a world unto it's own. Oklahoma is also excluded; it is the land of Okies and is solely unique.

Dont feel bad, I had to learn this, too.

Well in your opinion, where does West Virginia fall in "being southern". Or are we included as part of Virginia??? I have always been told that the mason dixon line decides that issue. Just wonderin????

went to colorado to visit our youngest son and stopped in a rest. asked the waitress if they had sweet tea, and she said and I quote"of course we do, there's the sugar, make it as sweet as you want." My last request for sweet tea until I got home. Polk city fla at the time. marrie

I guess know that I'm not southern since I'm from Florida .I musy be a Swamp rat. Cuss we eat cooter & swamp cabbagge with our fried fish & grits . Oh don't for get the sweet tea & coke cola's LOL

I'm 8th generation NC person and I have never heard anyone call anything but Coca Cola, Coke. We call darker soda's cola but only Coca Cola is Coke. Maybe that's a Texas thing or before my time. I would never call a Pepsi, coke.

No I call anything a coke. Like 'Ya got any cokes in there?' when offered a drink.. 'Yes weve got Dr. Peppers, sprites, pepsi, and coke'
all the same thing.

At Granny's you drank cow juice don't know why papa called milk that ,sweet tea or coca cola .Never seen a pepsi in her house.
