Southern 101---Explanation of all things Southern

Quote:
daddy's family is from Alabama, my 'pa and grandpa are here in Michigan to go to work for GM, ma's family is all Texans.

I love both states, and have spent time in both even though I grew up here in michigan for the most part.... but........... I'd rather be down south! Texas preferably. Love the pace of life there. Little slower than I'm used to, and thats what I like it. Don't have to rush rush rush rush rush.

You mean you don't wanna come out here, and try to keep up?

When I lived in Biloxi MS one summer, I learned that cleaned shrimp in Biloxi doesn't mean the same thing like in a restaurant or seafood counter at the grocery store.

In Biloxi, it means they only rinsed the shrimp off before they cooked it.

I have been learning Southern. I have a pretty good accent. Tons of words I say are southern like "Boy am ah shore tard after tuhday" and I tend to say southern things alot. When I hang out with some friends I talk with an accent just to mess around and I think it is starting to stick, almost like the old saying "If you keep making faces like that its gonna stay that way".

And when I talk to my Southern peeps on the phone I pick up the accent easily, its crazy. Some day I want to move down south. Either south or to Montana, they are super nice.

The lady I worked for had a son who would go shrimping. One day she asked if I wanted some shrimp for lunch. I said "SURE! Are they cleaned?" She said "Of course they are!" She served me a big bowl of pink shrimp with heads and feet and eyeballs still attached. I said "I thought they were going to be cleaned" She said "We rinsed them."

What I don't get is why my aunt thinks it's ok to say things like "Your cousin who's such a <word>, god bless her......."

Like saying "god bless her" makes it ok to talk bad about someone?

I have lived in NC all of my life, and when I meet anyone that is not from the south I learn new things every time.

southerners (or at least around here) don't measure a trip or distance, by miles we measure by minutes/hours. for example, if I were to plan a trip to Myrtle beach, I don't have a clue how many miles, but I do know it is 3 1/2 hours away. if I were giving someone directions to a certain place, I wouldn't measure in miles, I would tell them it's 20 minutes down the road...... around here our roads are so curvy and winding, that saying the miles doesn't do much good. it's easier to tell them how long it takes to get there. lol

also in the south, if you can eat it, than it can be fried!

some other words to remember:
warsh=wash
rinch=rinse
tar=tire
tarred=tired
iced tea=sweet tea (and don't you forget it!)

oh yeah, and hashbrowns are NOT cubed pieces of potato!! they are shredded potato, cooked on a flat top grill, and crisp on the top!! I hate when they are listed as hashbrowns when they come out home fries!

also southerners will HIT the lights, instead of saying turn on the lights

that's all I can think of right now

It softens the blow, so to speak, that's all. Hey there are gossips down here in the south, too, you know!

I dunno I guess I think if you're saying such things, then perhaps asking for god's blessing seems a bit.... insincere. Then again Auntie seems to only use "god bless her" for things that could get a girl landed in confession.
