Southern 101---Explanation of all things Southern

Amen!! How many people from Florida do you hear of retiring and moving to NY or MI?

That is because there are no Floridians in Florida. They came from NY in the first place and never want to go back, so they all stop here in the N. Ga Mtns to torture me.

I was born and raised in Alabama (but I escaped). My Pop's side of the family is Scottish, Mom's is German/Irish. So we have all sorts of strange words and sayings...

I'm in the Navy and travel all over the US and other countries. One thing I have noticed is that I pick up the accent of where ever I am after a few days.

After spending a few days in New York I called my Dad in AL, He said he thought the Gambino Family was after him

I think it is an adaptation thing I learned as a kid, I was shuttled between family in AL, WA, GA, NC, and DC. I had to learn quickly or get pounded by the locals.

I should be a spy...but my ninja skill has a flaw...It didn't work so well in Africa.....

2 of my Aunts ( pronounced awnt, not ant, they would smack me in the head if I called them ant) live in the Georgia Mountains. We drop by to remind them of their yankee roots all the time

awnt---ant---aint'---ain't

Which one? It really makes a difference.

awnt is mother's rich sister
ant is an insect
aint' is your dad's poor sister
ain't is a contraction of "am not"

In the south we have Kale, Polk, Collard, Dandylion, Mustard, and spinnach greens. Up north they have broccoli......

They were all Awunt's, and none of them were rich. I do remember a couple of my Aunt's saying if you call me an ant, I'm gunna smack you upside the head. I am an Aunt, not an insect...

We did it once in awhile to tease them, but ran REAL fast from the room before she could get us.

Hee hee.

As for Michigan and accents, a lot people who live in Michigan don't think they have an accent, but that not necessarily true. If you're into linguistics or anything like that, Google "Northern Cities Change Shift" sometime if you're curious. It's actually sort of a recent change that linguists think is very intriguing.

Yall are maken me roll. Something I have been asked about alot that we people in the south say is cook stove Someone from up north said why cook stove in the south there are cookstoves, and what most would think as a potbelly stove that fire burns in. Also we say yeast rolls and this girl I worked with said what other kind of roll is there. Bless her heart she was from Oregon and didnt know any better.
