Southern CA Swap meet-up / Funday!

Why SunnyCalifornia? You need them for your breeding project or something? For sure I don't have them but just curious.

No, not for breeding.... I'm just sentimental like that.... I had the chance to buy momma from Cara, sister wasn't for sale at the time.

But on my trip to Cara's place, it was love at first sight with a little white mottled roo. We didnt' know he was a roo at that point, and I was really just shopping for hens. The little black speckled pullet that was with him was awfully sweet, and quite obviously (his) its BFF, so I took both. I was trying to be practical, as I have limited coops, couldn't keep lots of different sizes separate.

She had some adorable younger chicks, and some really nice older hens too, but I kept getting drawn back to this one bird!! So I took it (him) and his little buddy, as I could see that they got along well, and could be kept together. Two days later he started crowing!!! LOL..... But my heart was won over already! LOVE my little roo. Not a chance I'd give him back!!!

Actually that black mottled hen might have been a good match for my white mottled roo!! They might have made some really great mottled babies!! Its really too early to see how he'll mature, as he's only 4-5? months old? We have to prep our OEGB roos for a show next week, I'll give him a bath too, and then post some pics of my little guy.

But, it was SO adorable today, I sat in their coop with them (yes, they have a large coop, big enough to sit in there with them) and I fed them some yummy mealworms I got from "crazyhuhn". Little Gordon ( the white mottled roo) was so chivalrous!! He'd grab a mealworm from my hand, walk about a foot away, then drop it.. and call his hen to come and get his little "prize" for her.

If my little spangled girl ever has the chance to grow in some neck feathers, she might be real pretty too!!

But she is VERY loved....

no he didn't take her... jose wants her... but i didn't know she was his sister... he wanted her too... i thought he said she was from grady... Oops...

Well, if she is not from me then its ok for Dennis to buy....it just that I don't want Dennis breed the short legs gene back in and end up with the undesire gene to start out his program. That is why the pair I gave Sue is not related and they compliment one another for breeding....they shoud produce some quality offsprings for Sue to show in the future.

....That is why I told Dennis to wait for the meet up so I can help him pick out the right hen for his roos...I am not a pro at this but I will share everything I know with you guys so together we will take this breed to the next level where we can compete with birds from east coast.

you know how young people are joey... very impatient... LOL... every day he would text me screaming that he needed hens... LOL...

you can never have too many hens... amirite..?

Joey!!

Love your ambitions.... YES we need to make our West Coast Seramas as awesome as our East Coast counterparts....

I don't have any breeding projects at all for Seramas. I'm really only 3 months new to the breed. If I can can come to the 5/21 meet up, I am interested in your critique of my favorite ( and only) roo.... granted, he has some growing up to do, but he does have the attitude down for sure!! I just need to work with him a bit more, so I'm more confident he won't go running off....he's FAST!!~ !!! I've only had him for a month or less...

I never anticipated "breeding" chickens. But my OEGB roos are really turning out nicely, and my hens were SQ stock, so I'm taking a chance?? Our first show will be my litmus test.... do I really have good stock? or am I just another Beauty Pageant Mom....!!

MHO... I think my problem as a potential "breeder" would be that I couldn't cull the old folks. I'd have to have a retirement home adjacent to the "hot coops"....LOL...and with that, I'd need more property!!

*****ATTENTION****

Can you bring any left over feed bags? Preferably clean, with chickens on them. We are going to make seat covers with them. If you would like I will pay 5 cents each.

OHHHH---this little green frog brain wants to know what sort of seat covers????? INTERESTING....you want the paper as well as the plastic?

Well, were wanting plastic, because they are going to get sown. Like seat covers for our outside chairs. And on the day of the last meet up, my tarp got a BUNCH! of holes in it so maybe we can make a new one. Its a really creative idea!

You sneaky guy.........yup, I have a tarp over my back door [where I keep my chicken supplies] made out of the plastic horse feed bags. I also have shade cloth on top of it, but it worked great even in the 6 days of rain we had. I can give ya some sewing pointers too if ya want. NOW comes the bad part.....I can't get those bags round here any more they are selling paper {AHHHH] Kate at OCSERAMA gave me 4 bags. Lets put out the word to see if any areas are still getting the plastic ones.
