Southern California- Fire Evacuation Plan with Chickens?

Sounds like great advice, and certainly you wouldn't be the only one evacuating with chickens...there has to be somewhere that would be accepting of them!

I would probably end up at a friend's or maybe a shelter. Either way, they would need a temporary coop. I have a small tent in my "Go" supplies. That's the only thing I could think of that's small, lightweight, and will keep them contained.

Sorry I couldn't have been of help.

Are they dropping Fosamax in your area? I have NO idea what the risk of that would be for poultry... Are they getting containment or are the fires still raging?

Keeping my fingers crossed for you!

No, not anywhere near me. I'm in San Diego County. The big fire(s) are much further north. But really good thought.... wasn't even on my radar!

I'd think that dog crates would be fine, I'd personally transport them in one crate together as being tighter together gives them more stability as the automobile moves (providing that it's not too hot, or too crowded of course), and then dividing them between the other crate when you arrive at your destination would work out fine.
Well, when I have had to move out in a rush, I have put them in dog carriers, dog crates, whatever I have available and stuff them all in my RV along with my dogs and just took off. Luckily I was able to return in the same night, because I did not bring food for them, just stuff for my dogs, since one of them is diabetic. I had to leave in a rush and just basically always think about bringing my dogs medication. Every time about this time of year we have some sort of fires! Everything is dried out and usually the weather turns really hot and windy!

I re-purpose empty instant folgers jars and pringles cans to put 'emergency' bird feed in, and store it in my freezer. The big folgers jars hold 37 ounces and covers feed needed for one day for my quail. The pringles cans hold about 24 ounces and covers feed needed for my chickens for a few days. I only have one adult chicken and she's a bantam/kikiriki mix (weighs 17 ounces), the rest are chicks. If you could store your dogs meds or food in the freezer (some medicines last longer that way, ask your vet), then it would be a great reminder to you to grab the feed too.

That's a good idea to have them sleep in the crate! Mine come when called (but who knows if there was smoke) and are in their coop at night.

Do you have a hurricane "go bag" for them? If so what's in it? I have feed and bedding.

Have to say that I almost miss hurricane season! At least you know they're coming/ can be somewhat prepared. Fire season is totally unpredictable.
I don't have a coop; just the screen porch & dog crates. I have a pet go bag as I have 2 dogs & a cat. I keep a copy of their vaccines, first aid kit, towels, blankets, collapsible bowls, spare leashes, trash bags, grocery bags, toys. Think that's about it. Then I just pack up food, treats, newspaper, bleach & pets. I've not had to evacuate, but have spent time in the tiny closet with the dogs & cat-before I had the 3 chickens. Yes, we do usually have plenty of time to prepare. I begin the first of June buying water & supplies each week so am usually stocked & don't have to go out & about with those unprepared panicky people. Got lucky this year, but the last 3 were the worst of my 50+ years in FL.
