The great quail caper, part 1. Have you ever heard a quail chirp? I am not sure what an adult sounds like, but the young quail have the most relaxing little whistle. They seem to make several different calls even as a chick. Tonight I think I experienced most of them. While sitting in the living room I hear the "distress" "woowoowoo woo" that I have learned means "OMG how did I get here? Why am I chilly? Where is the kibble?". So I get my lazy butt out of my chair and mosey to the back bedroom to see what all the fuss is about. I did tell you that this is my first time with quail, right?

Someone could have warned me that these speedy little buggers can jump 3 feet straight up at about 2 weeks and can do an imitation of flying at 2 weeks that would put any chicken to shame. I have 29 quail. I discover that an unknown number (since there is no possible way to count 29 quail in a brooder) are speeding all around the room. Under dressers, around the boxes, under the hamper, you name it. You would not believe how fast these things are. It is like trying to catch a hummingbird.

Enter the 6 year old. Now it is quail madness. Not only are the quail out of the brooder peeping (what is going on?), woowoowooing (HELP), and pepepepepeeeping (aaaah what is this giant creature chasing me around), but the quail in the brooder are going at it with the wooowooowoopeepeepeep (we are over here, come over here). Add to this craziness one of them is in the brooder with the 6 week old chickens. So into their brooder I go (big brooder), lest the poor little quail is eaten by my little dinosaurs and then I discover that all the chickens were actually in a pile in the corner clearly terrified of this little invader (the size of a bantam chick).

30 minutes later, now covered in pine shavings, poop, and chicken dust, we emerged triumphant, but what a workout. I just nailed down a roll of hardware cloth over that little brooder. Time to get building those quail cages.

In all seriousness, they have a really huge range of calls. http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/northern_bobwhite/sounds I thought the chicks would all just make peeping sounds, but they actually are making rudimentary calls. Cute when you aren't chasing them all over a cramped bedroom.

Thanks for the visual...

So, rough, rough, rough weekend. My daughters Jr Prom was lovely, she looked so pretty, and truly like a "Junior". Most of the girls dressed like it was a senior prom, or a wedding-not at all like 16 year old girls. She had a great time and danced the night away. She decided not to go to an after-party, which I had allowed her to go to, since Saturday we had big plans to get up VERY early. She's growing up and making good decisions. I'm very proud. I will post pictures as soon as I figure out how to do it. Because I'm NOT entirely in the 21st century.

Saturday morning, we got up at 6am, and drove up to Pearl River for a race that we actually started organizing in 2006. I am proud to say-it is all now completely automated, and has become a staple in the race circuit. It's the John Bellew Memorial 5k. John Bellew was one of my husbands closest friends, and he died on Black Sunday in 2005, when he and L27, E46 got trapped in an apartment during a blizzard and had to jump out the window. A close friend of ours, Rick Arazosa, who was my husbands captain in L27, and also lives around the block from us had spoken to Danny and asked him to bring him a t-shirt. He was feeling under the weather, having been diagnosed with Cancer and Mesothelioma last week. So we went, we all ran, and had a fabulous time. When we got home, Danny called Ricks house to tell him he had his t-shirt and would like to stop over for a beer and to drop the shirt off. His daughter called back and told us Rick passed away that morning. Suddenly. His wife went to the store and came back and he was gone. They had an autopsy done, since the doctors opinion was that it was 9/11 related-Rick and Danny spent until 6/02 down at the trade center on the GPS unit.

Saturday night, we had tickets that we bought weeks ago, for Jim Norton at Caroline's in Manhattan, so we drove in. Needless to say-the show was funny, but we just didn't have the emotional ability to really enjoy ourselves. The whole trip in, Danny was on the phone arranging for the 343 engine to be at Ricks funeral, and calling firehouses for honor guards and to get men to the funeral.

Sunday, we had promised to take the kids to the FDNY/NYPD hockey game so we went to that-Danny had been making calls to all people in the FDNY that knew Rick, so everyone we saw was devastated. We hung out with Danny's old FH so that was a good time, and my kids got to have that "Family" feeling that FD families enjoy. Yesterday was rough, I had to deliver a basket of food to the Arazosa's house and spent some time crying with Joanie and the kids. Then the news didn't have any good news either, so today I'm going to the wake, tonight we have tickets for Bob Seger. I'm meeting up with a couple of good friends, also chicken girls, and hopefully I can cheer up!!

On a good note, Kairi is back to his old self, with a shaved butt, which he doesn't seem to mind...I'm considering shaving his whole body-just think of the NO SHEDDING I can accomplish...

Wow. Rosie, that's a lot to have to deal with. Laura was at the FDNY/NYPD game also with members of her department. I'm glad she has that "family" as well.

Sounds like your daughter has a good head on her shoulders. They really do make us proud sometimes, don't they?

Suzanne, Sending you warm thoughts and best wishes for a long and happy life with Bobby. I hope you have a wonderful wedding! Tina
Okay, so I survived today. One more "work" day and then we're off to Vermont on Wednesday. I had to compress all my tutoring/teaching into today and tomorrow. Tomorrow's schedule includes a mani/pedi, puppy visit, lunch with my cousin, laundry, supermarket, dog sitter meeting, brooder cleaning, bank run and three tutoring clients. Finishing up by 7:30 pm. Then packing. Whew. I will be so glad to get on the road on Wednesday, after the car wash and my friend dropping off my bouquet.

By Thursday evening, I'll be a married woman. Or a remarried woman. If I live that long...

Oh yes....the sounds of quail and the picture "painted" was too funny!
Hysterical.....

Hi LSzajko.......welcome to the thread. You wouldn't happen to be Hungarian would you?

What an awful weekend....I do hope that you get through the sadness and comfort each other though this tough time.

Welcome, I'm Carol
How do your girls handle that cold up there? How many, and what type of girls do you have?
I'm already jealous with farm in your title...I should be queen chicks menagerie although it's not nearly as bad as 10 years ago with 13 animals , a child and a husband in a house the size of a postage stamp. My husbands a veterinarian and brings home all the rejects for me to take care of.when I say 13 ,I didnt have chickens at the time 'cause even though I have 16 with Arucanas in the bator I only have 1.....

Welcome again, you will grow to love us.

Clipped all the girls wings yesterday so maybe that will keep them from flying into my garden and the front yard.
I didn't clean up the clippings before I went out with Loretta and when my husband got home he thought we had another hawk attack.
My one EE thinks she is Columbus and jumps the fence to go exploring in the front yard. One day I'll find her roaming the streets of East Islip.

Thanks for the input, I do like "C" too but decided on "A" even though no one liked that one. It was the ring that did it for me. I didn't think just the chicken conveyed the message enough.
