Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Yesterday I was in NYC with friends for a baby shower. It was at a rooftop clubhouse in a 40 story apartment building overlooking the Intrepid. Gorgeous day and a fun party.

When I got home I planted the vegetable plants I bought, although my horticulturist friend says it's still too early...I also took some pictures of Pearl, my bantam cochin frizzle, for all those who were asking:

Nice pics Suzanne.

I love the views in NYC from the roof tops.
I believe my favorite is at "Top of The Rock" at Rockefeller center. The vistas behind the Plexiglas walls on a beautiful day are simply breath taking. Central Park amazingly so. It is a little pricy. Last time I went was maybe 4 years back and it was $15 a head. But it was really priceless in my opinion. I'd pay more just for the visuals and make no complaint.

So I was having a great day, I actually built a nest box all by myself (I know silly but I am not handy). Anyways all was well. I let the new girls out for the first time then rotated to let the other girls out. My husband was changing his oil in the driveway. I had a nice conversation with the neighbor about the eggs over the fence. I see an older man walk up the driveway and stop to talk to my husband. I figured it was a neighbor I didn't know. Only to find out he is with the town and was called because we had chickens. What bothers me is that someone didn't just stop and ask or just check the law. We are allowed to have as many hens as we please in my town. So the man says hello to me and I ask if he needs to go see them etc...he says no that its perfectly legal and we have a fence plus coops , He also informed me that I could have a rooster as long as it doesn't disturb the peace by being too loud. That was news to me, because I had been told we could have hens but no roosters. Another fellow chicken lady in a different part of town told me that I could have a rooster too, but I had thought she was mistaken. Anyways...I feel like this is what happens when you share with people. I don't know who called, but I recently gave three neighbors eggs and the girls have been here for almost a year now.

Talk about ruining my day.

It's too bad your neighbors called the town, but at least you got the okay from them. I'd LOVE to be okay with the town instead of living in fear of the day they come and tell me to take down the coop and get rid of all but 8 chickens. A visit like yours would make my day!!

Congrats on the nest box. It always feels so good to create something, doesn't it?

I think I need to go figure out something to create for dinner...

Don't let it ruin your day.:) You win. Simple as that. Laugh at the person who thought they might ruin your day cause you might just have ruined theirs.

My neighbors don't have to call the town, my chickens play in traffic (well, up until last week!) and the town can easily drive by and see them...all 6 of them (yeah right) Brookhaven is the pits as far as anything goes. I ask myself every single day, what was I thinking moving out here. I could have had more chickens and lower taxes in New Hyde park, where we came from!

Thank you all, my husband got angry with the guy and was defensive right away. When I walked over the guy just kind of shrugged and was like okie dokie....I guess it bothers me more that the guy who came was like ....well depending on who you talk to at the town you will get different answers about whats legal. I know for a fact that hens are legal but then he told my husband there is a limit of twenty five. When I called and what is was listed in the newspaper was that there was no limit. I think I am going to go to town hall next week and get a printed copy of the law like someone else suggested. Just so that I have something in my hand for neighbors. Funny enough is that my father was around yesterday and told me that I should dedicate one corner (away from all neighbors and against a state barricade for a highway) of my yard as a huge aviary for chickens. I am liking his idea more and more.

Thanks for the support again ladies. Building something was awesome, creating dinner is my specialty :)

I am creating dinner myself.
I'd go with your dad's idea if it's appealing to you. I* try to be very considerate of my neighbors and it's always paid off in the long run.
And I always have my law paperwork at the ready for any legal challenge.
Fortunately for me a buddy pays a lot of attention to ordinance changes etc. and sounds alarms when something about animal keeping becomes an issue in the political arena. Chickens are so far so good round these parts.

OK, my dear chicken-keeping, feather-friendly folks: Here's my dilemma: First: in the interest of full disclosure, this post has nothing to do with chickens. Nevertheless, I'm posting this here because I know of no other widespread community of genuinely nice people who might possibly be able to solve this for me. So here goes:

There is a luggage set for toddlers that is available for sale online to Canadians. The company will not ship to the USA. I am in New York State. The company is called Heys International, and they are located in Ontario. There is a Heys USA here in the States, but they don't carry this product and cannot access it for me. (Believe me, I've spoken with both companies' sales departments, customer service, supervisors, etc., etc. No way, nada, nuthin doin'!!)

It seems that the only way I can get this luggage set for my little granddaughter's fifth birthday is if some Canadian resident buys the set for me and then ships it to me via their post office or via UPS. I can send the payment via PayPal to the Canadian resident for all costs. (For the set and shipping to the Canadian resident, and for the shipping from the Canadian to me in New York).

The luggage set is comprised of two pieces, a rolling suitcase and a backpack, both designed and decorated to look like a big smiling yellow bumble bee. My granddaughter's nickname is "The Bee" and she's got dresses, slippers, bathing suits, etc., etc., all in bumble bee designs. So this luggage set will make a splendid birthday present for her.

BUT I CAN'T BUY IT BECAUSE I'M NOT IN CANADA!

I called UPS just now and told them the weight of the package and I gave them the Ontario zip code (post code) for the town where the Heys International company is located and asked them for a ballpark figure of shipping costs from there to my zip code in Freeport, NY. They said: $25 for three-day ground service. That's perfectly fine with me!

The company is:
Heys International Ltd. 333 Foster Cres. Suite 1 Misssissauga, Ontario L5R 4E5 Canada

Of course it will keep my shipping costs down for the first leg of the journey if the Canadian resident lives near Heys International and so I'm hoping some Ontario "angel" near post code L5R 4E5 is able and willing to help a fellow BackyardChickensdotcom member in this rather unusual request.

Here's the link to the item so you can see what I'm trying to buy:
http://shop.heys.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=Travel_Tots_2pcSet

With shipping and sales tax, the cost would be $73.44 sending it from the company to the Canadian resident assuming said resident is in the same general area of that post code. Then it would be about $25 for the "angel" to ship it to me in Freeport, NY, zip code 11520.

Anybody able to do this for me? or able to pass the request on to some Canadian friend in Ontario who might be the "angel" I'm hoping for? I would of course pay any needed import fees/customs fees etc. But since it's for personal use and not for any commercial purposes, I don't think there will be any (or very little).

If you'd prefer, you can send me a pm here on BYC or you can email me directly at [email protected]

THANK YOU !

Dear Grandma,
Your intentions are honorable. lol
You will need to pay taxes on anything bought Canadian and shipped from that side if from a company .....depending on how/WHO it's shipped FROM if ya get my drift.
The border inspectors determine what packages are opened and inspected etc for content. Can I say "busted" here??
The person shipping said item is held responsible for claiming the TRUE value.
Gift items are under another agenda. But your asking a lot from a stranger.

I wish you success.
