So how is everyone doing with the aftermath of Irene? The downed trees and branches are out of control here. Some people I work with STILL have no power! But I always try to remember... What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger. A good holiday weekend to all, and just remember... Costco has Christmas paper already!!! UGH.
Hi again. To all you locals... The director of the Queens County Farm Museum called me, their annual agricultural fair is Sept. 17+18. He needs chicken (and rabbit) entries BADLY. The farm is NY's oldest working farm, it's on Little Neck pkwy in Floral Park. He wants to make everyone aware of the joys of chicken owning. This sounds like a great weekend for me (I have no life). The birds do NOT have to be show quality, they can even be mutts! As long as they are clean, and not sick or bleeding, just presentable to the public. There will be people there to feed and water them, so you don't have to spend all weekend there. Just drop off either Fri. nite (preferred) or Sat. morning, and pick up Sun. nite. You need to register in advance to make sure he has enough cages. His name is Bruce Bergbom, his home # is 516-741-6708, the farm # 718-347-3276 or www.queensfarm.org. Oh, did I mention ribbons and possible cash prizes? Maybe I can meet some of you there! Roberta
And he said ok if not pullorum tested shhh.
Wow, I missed the start of this thread because I was away on vacation that week. Al, thanks for starting this. A little background on me. I Grew up in Mahopac and now live in Southern Dutchess county. We have 10 chickens. 5 RIR,1 EE, 1 BO,1 SS, 1 BR and 1 mixed SLP + RR. Ranging in age from 5 months to a bit over 2 years old. I am looking forward to checking in to this thread daily.
I'm glad you found us. Most of the NY main thread is about those upstate. I knew there would be some of us down this end that would want to share their experiences with chickens that are unique to this area of the state.
Since we all got hammered by Irene it has been a little quiet. That, and the fact it is Labor Day weekend. The weather is certainly not cooperating, though.
Hope to see you drop I'm on the thread on a regular basis.
Wishing all of us downstaters, and everyone else, a Happy Labor Day!

Looking forward to checking in on this thread. I read on one of your earlier posts that you were concerned about insulating your coop. All of my birds are cold hardy breeds. I didn't insulate the first coop I built ( I built a new one this summer ) and left their pop door open this past winter and you know how brutally cold it was here. The only time I closed them up tight was during the blizzard we had. And only for fear of having heavy drifting of snow in the coop. Chickens are extremely cold hardy, they actually have a harder time with the heat. Here is a picture of my old setup. It is a small coop but there were only 6 in this one. The new coop is 10x6.
I will get some pics of the new coop soon. The new coop is not insulated either but I did T111 on the outside and plywood on the inside walls. This gives me an air space between the two.
