Somehow I think the purple is gonna last waaayy longer than the red.
I think we need to wager on this one.....
Maybe because I've been both colors myself

Al, the chicken lover in me hopes that a sweater will cure the problem. The ******** in me wants you to take pictures of the hen in a sweater.

Maybe set something up where they can see each other but not get to each other, the way you do when you're introducing a new hen? Like reintroduce her to the flock?

I was hoping that once Rhonda started laying, the other girls would be a little more "welcoming". No such luck. Gladys gives her "the look" and she runs away, but Aggie takes every opportunity to give her a peck if she gets close enough. Ironic, too, that Aggie and Rhonda used to live together at Auntie Roberta's house. They remind me of the 7 year olds in my class.

Al, I'll trade you the purple fingers. I learned an important lesson about not using the electric mixer to add red food coloring to the red velvet cake recipe.

Suzanne, the thing is that I thought I had it all figured out and the girls were happy and everything was jolly. This event has me puzzled. I stood out there watching their behavior
and it looks like a different flock. They've been in their run for most of the last month and maybe that's what it is.

Red food coloring and a mixer...awesome! I feel like I just cast a ballot in a third world country. Luckily I didn't get a lot on my hands. Then again, I have to do it again tomorrow.

Roberta. I think youi may have an idea. If I see anymore feathers being plucked off then I'm going to get the sweater. This is nuts, but I have to do it.

This all should be getting easier, not harder!

I don't know if you subscribe, but this new issue of Backyard Chickens just happens to have a section on..... Missing feathers!
Hope you didn't get too colorful today, Al.

Oh Al, please please please buy a pink doggie sweater for your hen! I think that would just about make my month. :) I am not familiar with Blu-Kote, but I am familiar with Gentian Violet and that will be on your fingers until the skin wears off. They use that to stain cells for slide prep. You can use disposable gloves for hair dye but whatever's on your hand is staying on for a long time. Sorry. :-(

As far as toughening up your hens for the snow, well, I did shovel a path to their coop. Only one came out the first day, and then weirdly enough she just took off for the pine trees where I hadn't shoveled or put any treats out. I'm not really sure what was going through her chick pea sized brain, but she did seem a little chilly when she got back. As the snow melted, one of the other hens came out onto the shoveled area to eat treats, but my Easter Egger still refused to set foot outside until the snow melted completely. I think she's a real Latina chicken.

I hear what you're saying about taking care of hens not being all fun all the time. After losing one of my favorites to cancer earlier this month I realized just how fragile they are. If I was able to keep a rooster and rebuild my flock on my own maybe it wouldn't be so bad, but since I can only have 6 or less each one means more to me.

Roberta, I usually pick up magazines at Tractor Supply. I'll have to look for that one. Im sure I must have gotten it there in the past. I am going there in a little while to pick up some wood pellets.

Purple butt is marking her eggs with a purple stamp from her butt skin.

I checked. The purple colored ingredient in Blu-Kote is Gentian Violet.

The cover has a red house with a buff looking hen sitting on the window sill.
It pretty much has the exact conversation we just had, and it pretty much sounds like boredom is the cause.
Wow, I hope the rain that is going on here isn't snow up by you!

Roberta, I got it. It's Backyard Poultry magazine. In fact, I picked up the last issue too.

Yup, it sounds like boredom. They are all doing it to each other to varying degrees. Watching them for a while and you can see the little pecks here and there. I do think NeeNee might have been thinking of going broody because she cleaned off a patch on her breast too. Her longer feathers cover it up but you can still see it.

I put in a lot of treats for interest today. Mealworms, BOSS and a forage cake I put in yesterday. I may hang a cabbage or a couple of CDs to keep me busy. Guess they're getting cabin fever.

Ill see how it goes the next couple of days.

BTW, all rain here, no snow. We got lucky today, and it's still 42 degrees out in the coop right now.
