Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I like the chickensforbackyards.com site. They have a chart that's easy to read. I printed out pictures of all the breeds so I can tell them apart.

Got my hovabator all plugged in. The temperature has been a constant 100 degrees. I finally decided to order the lav orp eggs. They're on their way. Since I've had experience with hatching ducks, I figured I'd be good to go with the chickens. So excited.

BABY CHICKS!! YAY!!!

Nice! I'm sure they'll be beautiful. I wish I could hatch some, I know the girls would be excited but I guess a new puppy is excitement enough, lol. So far we have named the puppy - "Dutch" - it's a girl but that was my g-grandmother's nickname as a child and they were born on the same day. Turns out that was the breeder's mother's nickname too, which is why they named the kennels Dutch Bouviers. Now for the chicks, I was hoping to get some great female heroines like Amelie Earheart or Susan B. Anthony for the Welsumer and Marie Curie or Emilie du Chatelet for the Faverolle since they are both French. The girls want Princess Tiana and Princess Ariel naturally. Ah, the perils of parenting. We already have one hen named J. Lo (Perry Katy died, and yes, I know it's Katy Perry but the baby insists that her name is really Perry Katy) so I am hoping to win at least one of these names. I'm thinking names in a hat or something.

How many different breeds did you/we end up ordering?

Cheer up. My daughter (27) wants to name the new Buff Orp Esther. I guess it goes with all the little old lady names I've already got: Gladys, Agatha, Shirley, Wanda, Aretha and Rhonda. My mah johng girls.

I'm getting a Buff Orp, a Silver Laced Wyandotte and a Speckled Sussex. Donna's getting 3 Buff Orps and Bobby's friend Peter is getting a Buff Orp, a Barred Rock and an Easter Egger. I have to remind him to get his brooder set up. He's got young kids, so this will be fun for them.

I only ordered 5+ Lav Orp eggs because I'm going to be over the limit as it is now. I figure if 3 hatch, at least one should be a hen.

So the new Buff Orp (who's really Laura's chicken) will be Esther. I'm thinking of Lavinia for the Lavender Orp hen I wind up keeping (the voice of optimism here). Something British for the SS. Maybe Victoria. Still thinking about the SLW. Maybe Henrietta.

We put the door and the back vent in the coop this morning. I actually helped, sore shoulder and all. Bobby's working on the electric now, and then we're going to put in the insulation. I think we'll head back to HD for interior paneling and flooring. It's looking mighty fine!!

a few of them are running around eating the ones on the ground.

I guess it is something I need to do as maintenance.
I am grossed out right now.
I can't believe after just a few hours they are pooping them out. And eating them

I'm so glad I read this post right before we left to go out to eat. No spaghetti for me tonight!

Heather,
Here's a link where you can purchase Wazine online. There are plenty of other places too.

Thanks, this is good. The local feed store didn't have anything like this. I see there are also capsules for broader spectrum of worm treatment - does this mean I feed them each individually? I only have three hens right now so it wouldn't be that hard, just wondering. I might as well treat them for everything possible while I can. I do mix D.E. into their feed, and sprinkle it liberally around the coop when I do clean-up so I am hoping they aren't that wormy but I'm guessing they are or the dog-nephew wouldn't be getting sick all the time.

Good morning and Happy Easter; Remember that worming is very hard and stressful on chickens so follow the directions to the letter.Make sure you give them extra love and treats.

My husband is so furious with me and these rooster(s) Yes I now have 2. That he isn't talking to me.At least the roosters are

I should have gone upstate to spend Easter with my mom and sister. Enjoy this weather suppose to be 70 today. I'm going to paint the mail box and dig in the dirt

Happy Easter, all you eggers out there!

We're enjoying this weather, too. Bobby's hard at work on the coop. I was up til 3:30 am finishing a blanket I was crocheting, so I slept in. While I was snoring away, Bobby put down the floor in the coop. We decided on a dark linoleum remnant ($27) to make clean up easier. Next up is the insulation. He's just putting the finishing touches on the electric.

Here are a couple of photos:

And here's my blanket. It's for a 1 year old for his new crib at Nonna's house.

Looking good! I also put vinyl floor on our coop. I ran 2x3's all around the inside perimeter on top of the flooring and then caulked the edges to make it water tight. The vinyl floor makes it super easy to clean the dried poop up.
