Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hi Maggie, sorry t hear about the loss of your chicken. It is good to hear from you, though. You must be crazy busy with the house and all, especially now that spring is here. It may even feel like summer by Monday!

Keep in touch when you can. Take good care.

Well, after all stress, a million visits to the USPS website, emails all over the chicken world and about 54 text messages, I got a call this morning at 6:57 from the Post Office telling me the chicks had arrived. They let me in early to pick them up. All 11 seem healthy and happy. They immediately went to the feeder and waterer and are now doing a chick pile in the brooding box.

Heather's Salmon Faverolle (upper left corner) has kept up non-stop peeping, even while falling asleep in my hand. The hatchery marked them so we could figure out who was who.

The replacement eggs are in the incubator, and Bobby's hard at work on the coop. And it's not even 8:30 yet. Who needs a job?

(It's okay to give them electrolytes in the water, right?)
Electrolytes should be fine. A good sign they are already at the feeder. They look perky in the pic. I'm sure you'll have a great day now that they have arrived.

Thank you! Feels good to be back! I am stumbling around on this new byc layout though.....sigh......this old grey mare just ain't what she used to be.lol.......oh today promises to be less windy and gorgeous. Got the DH home and we're clearing and planting I hope. Got a lot of seeds to get going as well.

Been a long time since I've posted . :) Not on the pc much.....still keeping very busy with this new/old house. Actually going out to spring clean my coop today! I hope all of you are well and drowning in eggs about now.
I am down to 3 hens. Lost my barny to an un-explained death this past Monday morning. She was un-harmed and the day before eating out of my hand with no signs of illness. My other 3 are healthy and still acting normal. A friend tells me perhaps she had a heart attack? I just don't know.......but she layed jumbo dark brown eggs and Tiger Lily is missed.
I believe my silkie is on the veerge of going broody again. Maybe I'll get her some fertile eggs to sit on. Good time for a hatch.
from sunny staten island........ maggie

Hi Maggie! Good to see you posting again. Lots of work here also. Just got some seeds started. Greens for the girls. I have a couple of tomato plants in my classroom too. Part of an experiment to see if worm castings make a big difference in growth rates. I have a friend who raises composting worms. Between my chicken poop and her worm poop, things should be popping!

A beautiful day so far. Awaiting Heather and Donna, who are coming to pick up their babies. When I brought the box in, my girls heard the peeping and headed for the hills. So much for maternal instinct!

Enjoy the weather, and don't work too hard...

Thanks Al. :)) I sure hope we don't get to high temps like we did last year! boy o boy that was HOT.

Got me a lot of stray cats stalking my birds the past few weeks too. sigh..........i don't know what to do about that. Lost 1 of my 2 dogs late sept. and my little 7 lb. girl thinks she's a big shephard and chases those cats that are twice her size. My birds have been on lockdown. Hawks not hanging out as much anymore thankfully. Now just racoons and feral cats to deal with. It never endsa..............:)}

I heard it could hit 90 by Monday. Don't think any of us are ready for that. Sorry to hear you lost your dog, too. You've had a rough last six months of it. Hang in there.

Trying not to get another dog. We'll see how long that lasts.LOL but I did rescue a dwarph house bunny named Elizabeth. Old McMaggie had a farm..............lol

Where is my buddy LICHICK these days?

Hey Maggie, I should be meeting Jeanett on the 22nd, there is a show all us gals are going to in CT.
I hope Abi's truck is big enough to hold us all (me, Vera, Abi, Beth, Jeanett, YOU?) and a bunch of chickens, of course.
We have to drive around, the ferry isn't running when we have to leave early.

Suzannne, Glad to see the chicks have arrived safe and sound.

Maggie, nice to hear from you again. Sorry about your loss.

Al, I'm ready for 90 on Monday.

OK well my sexing of day old chicks is not 100%. My youngest son and my wife have both heard some beginnings of crowing coming from the brooder coop. If there are any roos in there would anyone be interested in adopting a cute BO roo?
