Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Wilkens farm is a nice place to visit. They have the whole doughnut/hot cider thing. They also have a hay ride and pumpkin picking too! I think that's the easiest to get too as well. Literally right off the highway.

Hi all you Southern NYers. So happy to see some "locals"! I'm in Huntington, on Long Island. We have some different challenges, I'm finding out. I'm in my second month of chicken ownership (that means they own me, of course).

Agway in Riverhead has feed and tasty (I'll take your word for it) Happy Hen Treats. I rescued a wandering chicken and then ordered 3 chicks online from chickensforyourbackyard.com. Happy, healthy babies - 1 week old.

Hope you all don't mind my jumping in. Love to hear from more Long Islanders!

Welcome to the thread. Any reason you drive out to Riverhead, when there are Agways closer?
Don't get me started about my age, I remember back when there WAS an Agway in Huntington...
Back when gas was .29 cents a gallon....

Welcome smkchick, My name is Rich, feel free to jump in anytime. Congrats on your new chicks. What kind of birds do you have? I never heard of "chickensforyourbackyard.com" Is the address correct?

They are only 7 months old now. Does that mean they won't molt this year and will continue to lay throughout most of the fall and winter? Got 5 out of 6 this morning and I am guessing there will be one more when I get home form work.

I might heat the coop but most people say not to do it. Maybe I will leave an extra outlet for a heater when I put the electric in.

Maggie, I think Outhouse Orchard closed up last year. Not 100% sure, but check first. Salinger's is not an orchard where you can pick your own. Fishkill Farms, as I remember, is one place you can go. Should be closer to Chickendude, so he may know.

Chickens will usually have their first molt after 1 year of age, my RIR still give me lots of eggs but they slow way down during their molt. This is their second molt. Think hard and long about no heat. Your birds will be just fine. I have electric in the new coop for lighting when needed and to plug in an electric heated water bowl and an electric fence.

The Outhouse orchard was sold last year. The Outhouse family is still very much involved with the operation. I heard an add on WHUD 100.7 this morning for Outhouse. So It is def. open.

Al, I have power out to the coops just in case, and ran fans this summer. I don't plan on heat, but with the crazy weather we have been having lately.... It doesn't have to be alot of heat, even a light bulb will put out heat if the coop isn't too big or drafty.
On those really obnoxious nights below freezing, all we use is a drop light.
Yes, I know the light will confuse them, but it's temporary. Just enough to keep them from freezing on the worst nights.
