Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hey, where's Roberta?

You all have had me cracking up the past couple of days. Great to read the posts while this gloomy weather continues.

Suzanne, love the new avatar.

Heather, I saw where you were asking about feed with no GMOs. I did the organic feed for a while and got a bad batch once. I played around and went from one to the other and from soy to soy-free. The last one I used had fish meal as the protein booster and boy did the poop smell. Also, the feed said it was organic, but there is no organic fish meal, so I'm not sure how it still qualifies as Organic. Since the beginning of the year I went with Purina Layena Plus Omega and have noticed larger yolks and the one chicken that always layed distorted eggs seems to be laying mostly normal ones. I still use UltraKibble on occasion as an added booster, but a lot less Than I had been using before. I don't eat organic all the time and I felt the nutritional components are more consistent in a good commercial feed. They have the nutritionists on staff and the answered the questions I emailed them right away. Plus, the codes the bags I get tell me the date of manufacture and the mill. Presently, the feed comes from Purina's mill in NY. Purina also makes an organic feed, but it is only available on the west coast. I would rather not use GMO corn or whatever, but in a few years they wll all be cross pollinated and I'm not going to obsess and make myself crazy anymore over it. My chickens ate what I thought was better than I did for almost a year. Now they seem to need less feed, lay better eggs and their poop doesn't stink. Plus my wallet is happier about the change. $16 for 40lbs. instead of almost $40 for 50lbs. (with shipping,) makes economic sense for me too. Regular Layena is about $15.50 for 50lbs. I'm sure this is more than you wanted to know, but I did do a lot of research on feeds.

Carolyn, Happy Anniversary! 52 years. Simply wonderful.

Have a good night, all. Time for me to go to roost.

Bobby's twin, separated at birth.

I love the guy, but he doesn't get that working with kids is like being pelted with small rocks all day long. When I get home, I don't want to discuss the economy or the problem with schools, or explain what a torrent is, or repeat something five times because he doesn't hear me, or decide on the next project or pretty much ANYTHING.

I'm having a hard time today. Can you tell? Just want to crawl in a hole and stay there...

Everyone needs to post chicken pictures.

Men don't get it at all. I don't know why we keep them sometimes.

Let me find some pictures for you.

May. My snuggle girl. She can get me out of a bad mood in no time. She also assisted the old man with building the nest boxes.

I just realized I don't have a recent picture of Lovey! My big fluffy BO girl! As soon as the kids leave, I have to rectify this situation!!

Love those big fluffy Orpingtons!

Thanks for the pictures. Gladys used to "help" Bobby when he was building the coop. I was afraid she'd get hit in the head with the hammer, she was so close!

Very quiet out back this morning. The rain must have brought up some worms. Off to work this morning - it's pajama day for the second grade because we had to cancel our field trip. The kids ought to be completely nuts. That will be fun!

Six full days and two half days left. Bring on the unemployment!!

Rosie, they are all pretty ladies and crazy roo. Doncha just love that 1 bird who thinks it's your buddy. They mumble and speak while you sit or walk around with them. Right now I don't have one like that.:<((

I did have 1 turken last winter who had promise. It was friendly, curious and always looking for me in my door window. but she became a he and had to go live elsewhere.

Out of this hatch I am hoping for that 1 special quirky bird to hang with.

No Al, that's great. I get myself completely worked up sometimes too and then I feel like I need to lay down somewhere with the lights off eating organic celery for the rest of my life. I get emails from a guy that raises his own pigs and cattle from start to finish and he sends out these missives about GMO soy and corn and pesticides and it's scaring me to death. The last email I got he said some of the big brands use sand as a filler (!) which sucks. I also get emails from our local SPCA group advising me about bad batches of dog food and stuff all the time, and it all comes from China. What a world we live in, eh?

I think everyone needs one. She's like my little side kick. I went out to clean up the coop, and while the other girls hid like I was coming with bread crumbs and mozzarella, she supervised the whole thing. Sat on my shoulder, watched with the little head cocked like "Uh, you missed a spot, how many times do I have to show you how to do this?" Totally into the whole thing until I finished and brought out the worm treats. Then I'm everyone's best friend. Except the nutbar, Lucy aka Luke. He's truly hallucinating that I'm a wolf with a taste for chicken.

I hope you get a chicken partner in your next hatch! She makes my day, all the time.

Suzanne, I love this analogy so much I am going to steal it. It is the best one ever. You make me laugh all the time. I don't have any good recent chicken pictures, but there is this:

The post performance hot dog, and her tutu is now a head-piece.
