Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

The Small Scale Poultry Flock by Harvey Ussery. He does everything, designs coops, and tractors, plants grains for his birds, makes his own feed, raises worms ... Yikes. But the water thing looked like a good solution. I borrowed the book from the library, but I think about it enough that it might be worth it for me to own it. (High recommendation, that)

Morning, everyone. It's raining up in Putnam county this morning. How is it out by you guys on LI?

Time to get wet and let the girls out.

It is raining and COOL here this am!!! I am loving it and so is my garden. Looks like 3 days of clouds/rain but I don't even care as long as the heat stays away.

Rain here on LI as well. It's all good - more grass seed went on the lawn yesterday.

We went to the fair last night. I didn't get the chance to dunk Laura, but it was great to see so much of the community out enjoying themselves.

We sat really close to the fireworks. It was AMAZING! They do a really great show. And up close like that? Took my breath away, literally.

I'm thinking of hatching again. My friend wants to wait til next year to stock her farm with guineas. But I saw some beautiful lavender ees on ebay (eggs). Someone stop me....

It's a cool 65° up here right now. The rain is working wonders on my tomatoes. This may be the bumper crop I've been waititing for! Even the squash is doing well. A small harvest from the Zucchini so far, but they don't have any vine borers or powdery mildew this year.

Al, I am getting some powdery mildew on my zucc............what to do???? Any good remedies to suggest? They are in full sun and I am not over watering them at all. I just want to stop it from spreading.

This may sound strange, but it works. Spray a mixture of milk and water on the leaves. If the plant is healthy, then it should work. I had so much growing around the squash plants, and they were overcrowded to begin with that the spray had limited value that year. The borers were a pain also and weakened the plants. Those you have to cut out with a razor blade and bury the vine of the leaves to have it Re-root itself.

Make sure you water early in the morning only, and have the plants spaced well.

I'm thinking of taking out my zucchini plant. Mildew is bad, and I don't have room this year to space things properly. I'll plan for some next year and hope for better results.

Suzanne, I never would plant mine using the standard "three feet in every direction should be kept clear" method. I would always try to plant too many and too close, and suffer the consequences for not trusting the label. This year I only planted three, and that's probably two too many. I did leave lots of room between plants this year and that did make a difference. If yours is bad, then it might be wise to remove it before it causes any problems to the other plants.
