I've heard the same thing. I found some very smooth, oval, white rocks on the beach near us, those worked too. Too well, J.Lo keeps trying to hatch them.

HELP!! I noticed Shirley limping today when I went out to clean the coop. Bumblefoot. In BOTH feet. Slightly swollen pads with black scabs in the middle. I figured I'd soften up and remove the scabs, let the wounds drain and treat with neosporin. Yes?

I'm going to move her indoors until she's better. yikes.

Yuck poor girl.
I had to also take a large cheesy substance out after the scab came off. Soak in salt water for a while as it makes it easier to peel that scab on up and off.
I had to use a scalpula to open it up even more and dig it out in pieces. It was amazing how big it was when it didn't even show up as very swollen on the outside.Like a jumbo marble size.Blood does appear so don't get frightened.
Gotta pack it with neosporin etc. and wrap it up afterwards to keep it clean.

I just dropped my son at football practice. I'm going to go have an x-ray on my hand this morning-it's not getting any better-it's getting worse, and I'd like to just find out what the heck the problem is. I swear-I'm falling apart! :lau  I hit 45 and it hit back. HARD!!!

My middle son has practice tonight, so I'll be cooking an early dinner. The season of 4pm dinners has begun. By the time football season ends, the kids are starving by 4 and drive me nuts when I try to make dinnertime back to 6. Creeps.

My husband is going to be hanging a light inside the hen house soon, since I'd like to extend lying through the winter, so it will go on at 4am, and stay lit until 8 pm. That should be enough light, right? I can't wait until my little girls are old enough to lay-they're about 16-17 weeks old, so it should be soon!! :celebrate

I just read recently that 14hrs of light is sufficient.

Well so much for feeling so bad for Blarney. I went to turn the hose on and he attacked me. A bleeding hole in the top of my foot and an even bigger one on my wrist.what the heck is he thinking. I know if he was my dads chicken he would be soup tonight. I can't believe the size of the holes he put in me.
Welcome home Suzanne.

Ouch! I had something similar happen last week. I went to pick up one of the little splash roos and must have startled him....he turned, bit my forearm and wouldn't let go. He pinched the heck out of me and I have a bruise to show for it. I was ready to hop in the car and drive him right over to Jenne in PA. Since then, I've been leery of holding him but he has behaved just fine. Ungrateful little roosters...we feed them...pet them...and then they bite us!

This brings me great pain to type this, but does anyone have a kind way to put down a hamster? She is not doing well, and is basically going into ketosis despite the antibiotics and food supplement. I'm not even sure I could bring myself to do anything though. I hate to see her just suffering and barely breathing. Ugh, poor little baby!

I'm sorry for your pain.
I am betting she will likely pass very quickly on her own so don't pressure yourself for remedies right now. You can let mother nature take it's course as you've done all you can. Just keep her comfortable.

Been there with many hammys and it's never easy. The solutions are harder so best you let the course run. I find holding them when I can in the end comforting.... telling them what a good friend they have been..... knowing they left this world well loved comforts selfish old me.

hugs....maggie

I have to say that my hens lay all winter long. I never supply light....I .never did. But they say happy hens lay more so maybe small numbers and lots of attention along with good eats is most of the battle.

Heather, I feel so sorry for you and the kids. I know it is terrible to watch an animal suffer. I would try to make the hamster as comfortable as possible and hopefully it will pass quickly.
