Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

OK, day 4 underway.
DH got going round 7am digging ditch to bury fencingaround the perimeter this morning. I came out by 8 and we got to wrapping chicken wire around the entire coop. 2 wraps of 4 foot to get up high and tuck inon top and underground.
Then he added the roofing which I need to run out tomorrow for 1 small additional piece of.
We placed bricks/stones all around the outside fence lineand on top of the underground wire..... to discourage digging entry. All recycled "stuff" found on this property of ours.
Tomorrow we paint/cut/load up the nice wood to the outside and firring to make it all nice and tidy. Door will be added last after I decide on how I want it painted.
Not too bad for day 4 and my dh is an anima lwhen it comes to "jobs well done" and who will be well rewarded.:<)

This is todays progress.

Pearl my BLRW, by far the most curious and talkative creature.... wondering what we are up to. She has laid eggs both days inside her coop whil;st all this is going on.

Pearl, again encouraging tom to do a good job.

By today's finish.

My blue cochin Aggie giving her seal of approval laid 2 eggs in their coop the past 2 days as well.
Tomorrow back to home Depot or Lowes for some finishing pieces.
By mid-week hopefully the 1/2" hardwire mesh we are adding around the bottom of the pen will be up along with the refinished/cut to side and meshed screen door.
This is tuning into a big expense and we had a lot of pressure treated wood to begin with for free. eGads....this is the end for me. We could take a nice little vacation with what this is costing. NAHHHH.....I'd rather have chickens.

My sewing machine soldvery well on eBay so there ya go!

I just might move into the guest house on the left.

If I mention getting a turkey again ......I just might have to!

It's beautiful!!

I still have to do some underground hardware mesh to stop my little rodent visitors. This afternoon I was chatting in my room with Laura when Bobby came up from the man cave to announce that he had just seen a rat scurry across the front by the window well. So now they're in front too! They burrowed under the front stoop, including digging a small hole in the bottom of a brick! Super varmints. I put poison pellets into the two holes they made and put the bricks back so no squirrels or cats can get to it. This is in the front, where the chickens are not.

Thanks for letting me know that I'm not the only one with these strange little eggs. You begin to think someone planted them to drive you crazy!

We had a nice day today. Drive up to Opus 40 in Saugerties. Then took a short drive to Woodstock and hung out there for a few hours. Haven't been there in over 35 years. Had a great time. Going back at the end if the month to the Garlic Festival in Saugerties.

Hope you all had a decent day.

Maggie, the coop and run looks awesome.

Suzanne, get rid if those rats ASAP. They breed like..well, rats! You could have tons of them in a couple months. Check to see if they have a food supply in the area, besides your feed.

Al, if you get the Tapatalk app for iPad, you will be able to upload photos. The app is free but you will need to pay $1.99 for photo hosting. You can upload a small number of pics for free, and the hosting is worth purchasing. BTW, did Orleans play at Opus?

Today, I finally talked my hubby into making a poopboard for our little flock of egg layers who are going on five months old. I measured, he cut and assembled, I painted and he installed. He did all the hard work :).

Tonight, I waited until all 10 ladies were smooshed into the 1.5'x2' litter box they like to sleep in, then I picked them up one at a time and placed them up on the board. They weren't too happy about being moved! The roosting bar is not installed yet and I hope they stay put all night.

Here is a pic of the 2'x6' poopboard before paint. I filled it w/40 pounds of PDZ and will take a pic of the final installation once the roost is in place.

I love taking rides like that and I love going to Woodstock. They have a great fabric store.
Did you crack open the egg to see if it had a yolk? Apparently they form due to a small particle dislogding in the reproductive tract and then is treated like an egg.
When you go to the garlic fest make sure you bring some home to plant. I had great success with that this year. You plant it in the early to mid fall.

My brother lives in Saugerties, so we hear a lot about the Garlic Festival, although I've never been. I call Saugerties "The Land that Time Forgot" because it has such a 50s feel.

I got some prize-winning garlic from my other brother in Buffalo. What part of it do I plant?

Oh Suzanne, that's just yuck. Rats are really, really smart and so tough. I second what Al said though, get your eyes on what their food source and fresh water source is and you may be able to stop it. If not, I would consider calling in the experts pronto before they get super established in your yard and out of control.
Edited to add: because you have to stop this now before you end up having to get rid of the chickens. If you have a single crabby neighbor, that could be a terrible weapon to use against you. :(

The garlic I planted was eaten to the nub by the chickens, as was the wild onion bunches that I normally like to pick and put in omelets. They don't really eat much else in my garden, apparently they are French chickens and have a taste for onions.

FYI, the Yorktown Grange Fair is next weekend, Thur - Sun. http://www.yorktowngrangefair.org

I might make it on Saturday, not sure. It's nowhere near as big as the NJ State fair, but that is also part of its charm. And yes, there are chickens! Plus midway games, rides and fried dough. Oh and sheep and hand-spun wool. Just sayin'.
