Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

So, good morning to all! Rough patch with sports yesterday again-my 11 year old son, the football gifted kid, got hit on the field, helmet to helmet then fell backwards and hit the back of his head. Yep-probable concussion. (these kids can't catch a break!)

He woke up with a headache (naturally) so I kept him home, and I'm hoping the concussion clinic calls and gives me an appointment for today! His PAL football team is going to just drop when they find out-they only have 12 kids, and Joe is the center...the only center they have. He's really upset, thinks he let them down, and thinks they'll be mad...they won't, but they won't be happy at the hands of fate.

I didn't get to Lewens yesterday, so I canned some dill pickles. Apparently these are a popular item because I told a friend, and now I'm taking orders. 7 phone calls yesterday.

Lewens is on my immediate list for today. I've got a great recipe for apple cinnamon butter and want to make some salsa too.

Anyhow, so doctor, canning, and maybe my traditional 20 minute power nap today.

That is a shame rosie. Hope he's OK. My son was HS center and concussions scared the ShiRt outta me. He got one at summer camp and it was in the boonies of PA and over an hours drive to the hospital by ambulance. jeez........ Thankfully my dh was a coach so he was there making sure he got there asap.

Has anyone here gone to the Hudson Valley Harvest Festival which comes up this weekend in New Paltz.....Ulster County??. Might just take a long drive upstate and looking for something nice to do on Saturday.

I used a friends recipee and made butternut squash soup. It is yummy! It is kinda sweet and uses apples/potatoes and 1 small onion.
I am finally using up my crop of squash and will miss them when they are gone.:(

How are the marans shaping up? My cuckoos are pretty but wish they had been splash.
Very nice birds. Meyers hatchery $9.49 each sexed (hen) chicks. They are more "paint" pattern than splash which I like. They are clean legged but meyer's is testing foot feathering so I got a few of each. Very calm birds. So far very happy with them. I think your cockoo"s will lay darker eggs

You use a crockpot to cook it all day-it's a tried and true one!

Apple cinnamon Butter

Apples, (a cooking apple)
Sugar (1 c. of sugar for every cup of applesauce)
Cinnamon oil
Canning jars
Lids & rings

Clean, core and peel apples, then cook apples and make applesauce. Put applesauce and sugar into crockpot and cook slowly all day. When it is done (the applesauce will turn brown), add cinnamon to taste (approximately 4 drops) and stir. Put applebutter in sterile canning jar. Boil lids and put onto jars then put rings on. Process 20 minutes

Tonight my friend with the farmstand gave me probably a whole bushel of soft tomatoes for sauce. Plus a bag of apples (I promised her a pie), some old corn for the girls and a bunch of kirby cucumbers.

I never made pickles before. I was thinking of giving it a try. Suggestions?

And she was so happy with the basket liners I made for her. I need to move to the country.

Jeanett, Jeff in Hauppauge said he'd take Leon (grudgingly). I'm going to drop him off tomorrow...Thanks for the help. It's a big load off my mind, although he was quiet today (Leon, not Jeff).

My brother was so funny today. We kept looking for him and he was out on the back stoop hanging with the girls. He wants chickens sooo bad.

Zoo day Sunday. It will give me something to look forward to while I'm taking my certification exams. Heather, do you think the fact that they are in Breslin Hall will bring me luck?

I am *thinking* about ordering a pullet special from a hatchery.
Suddenly I am getting orders for chicks.
Anyone interested?
