Suzanne with all this SHIrT I don't think I told you how beautiful the afghan came out. Trimmed in black it looks like stained glass. One project down......

On a lighter note and speaking of ShiRt... Donna, I get more comments on that "CHICKEN SHIrT" T-shirt. I had some random kid stop me in a parking lot to tell me how cool it was and my grandmother chuckled at it, so apparently it has a broad demograpgic appeal.

I think I need an autumn or holiday chicken sweatshirt.

Someone stopped me in Home Depot the other day to tell me it was the coolest shirt he'd ever seen.

And speaking of shiRt, the situation with my mother has flared up again. Apparently, our agreeing to let her take a HELOC on her share of the house is not good enough for her. So now she's cutting us all out of her life. And this is BEFORE we signed the loan documents.

I'm starting to think it's dementia. No joke.

Roberta,
I've become a big fan of showgirls. Please don't give up on them. I'm sure we can find you some beauties for breeding. Clover Field Farm had some Lavendar showgirls for sale at one point. They may be sold by now, but it may be worth keeping in mind when you are ready.

I small suggestion for those of you who have flocks with symptoms of respiratory infections.   I did a lot of reading on BYC two years ago about treating chickens' colds, runny nose, sneezing, "coughing", etc.    There were quite a few posts about using Oxine (non-activated, of course) as a vaporized mist for the sick chicken.   They described how they isolated the chicken in a small space, covered the box or cage with a big towel or other enclosing material, and then set up a vaporizer to infuse the enclosure with the Oxine.    I was much impressed with how amazing the results were, as reported in those BYC postings.  For sure if I had the relevant signs and symptoms in any of my hens, I'd definitely try it.    I know that most of you on this New York forum board are a whole lot more experienced than I in chicken-keeping, and some of you are professionals in the field of microbiology and veterinary medicine and related spheres of expertise, so my suggestion is given here only because I'm hoping to be of help in some way and because I was so impressed with the positive outcomes as reported in the posts.

Speaking of Oxine...Doc Brown includes it in the Emergency Kit. He uses it for respiratory issues.

Here are his directions--->
Nasal Flushing with Oxine:
"Mix 5-6 drops of Oxine in a quart of warm water
Using a syringe without a needle, draw a sufficient amount of the mixture into the syringe
Place tip of syringe at opening of nostril
Keep the birds head down and mouth open to avoid aspirating the bird!
The Oxine/water mixture should run out of the birds mouth.
Follow the flushing with VetRx squirted liberally into each nostril. Do this after each flushing.
It may be necessary to use some antibiotics to cure a swollen eye problem."

Dr Brown includes Oxytetracycline in the Emergency Kit as a respiratory antibiotic. Directions are to mix 2 teaspoons per gallon of water. Administer for 10-14 days. He has a note that antibiotics should not be used with probiotics. I think that Tractor Supply carries this antibiotic.

If you all haven't purchased Docs kit, I highly recommend it.

Thanks so much, Littlecritters.. It was one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do. Those were some of the sweetest, friendliest, most curious chicks I've had and I had let myself bond with them. It would have been easier if I hadn't.

I wear crocs as ugly as they are and just scrub them with antibacterial soap in very hot water, rinse well and then spray them with a strong oxine solution. I keep separate shoes for each pen, or area as they aren't really pens, just fenced sections of the yard. I would free range if I didn't have weird neighbors but I guess we can't make them live in a bubble....... I wouldn't want them to live like that anyway. They need to be allowed to be chickens.

It's so heartbreaking reading everyone's accounts of diseases and losses.. I've never cried so much as this past week, I don't think. I'm praying for all of our innocent birds.

I am completely empathetic to your feelings. I've cried twice since June over new birds that have been ill and died. These little birds are so trusting and dependent on us to help them. It's so distressing...

Suzanne, the afghan is fantastic. Be proud! After seeing your picture I had to grab a crochet hook and stitch up a baby hat. I havent made one in many months and it felt really good to do that.

Up at 6 am today. I'm having stress reactions - stomach pain, restlessness, anxiety. I need to get busy today and put the whole Mom situation out of my head. I think I'll spend the day outside doing yard work. The fresh air and exercise will do me good, and I won't be near the phone or computer.

So glad people like the CHICKEN SHIrT tee, it was Suzanne's idea. I just made it happen. Maybe I should try and advertise it more and Suzanne and I can become rich!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll get on that Jersey hen! How about a chicken with a santa hat on, or a snowman made up of different breed chickens? Any ideas? Suzanne? Hmmm, everyone put your thinking caps on. I will too!

Yup-I got up at 3. I have so much stress I feel like I'm going to explode.

My head hurts, my chest hurts (typical symptom for me-nothing to be alarmed about-except it means I need to do something about this) and I have zero energy-zero. I think a doctors visit is in order. Today. This is really over the top bad. I think I'll take my vitamin D and hope I feel a little better.

I'll get to the doctor after I do the list of 47 things I have to get done...Like usual.

Rosie ask your doc for a B12 shot. They seem to give me a little boost when I get one. my sister had symptoms and went to the ER last week.......all stress related after a battery of tests and 4 hours later.
Drink lots of fluids, stay away from sugars and too much coffee .......try to eat healthy does get you on the road back.
