Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Heather, I too have CDs and a bell for my girls. I also put in branches for them to perch on, and an old ladder. I throw dry leaves down in the run and scatter corn/oat scratch and mealworms for them to scratch for. I often give them a head of lettuce or cabbage - that keeps them busy all day.

As far as treats go, I do give them leftovers. I even take home scraps in "chicken bags"!

I suspect the UK started that ban because of mad cow disease.

I hope everyone has survived the holiday and has a stress free day today.

I am making a spiral ham and using all my sides/leftovers from yesterday for a weekend of ready made food.

Today I want to take a lopg beach walk, clean the 2 coops and give them fresh bedding

Hmmm....I also want to wooden
watch a good classic mthe ovie tonight at some point if I can keep my eyes open.

Caught "The March of The Wooden Soldiers" at 7am yesterday morning and really enjoyed seeing that after so many years.

I am glad to hear that everyone had a nice Thanksgiving. We decided to invite less people over this year and the day was far less stressful, but I missed having everyone. Catch 22. I think I will just suffer the stress next time so I can see everyone gathered and screaming and yelling at one another

. The work is the same for me anyway, I still made all the same stuff (and amounts), I don't do "scaled down" very well. Today we will be eating thanksgiving sliders (potato rolls, turkey, mayo, homemade cranberry/orange, stuffing, lettuce) and sweet potato pies.

These little pies... so dangerous. I take the leftover candied sweet potatoes (no marshmellows in mine) and put it in the food processor, then I put the filling into muffin cups that have been lined with pie dough. So yummy and easy. I serve it as a side to the sandwiches, but it is really more of a dessert.

I am traveling for business again next week, so off to pack soon.

Thanks guys for the great ideas, I have to get this finished by sunday so if it comes out interesting maybe I'll put it up as an article. I really like the point about free ranging being enrichment; just by allowing them to do what comes naturally we are enhancing their lives. I also agree that PETA is extreme in some cases. I don't agree with their position on zoos or circuses. It does take two extremes to find the reasonable middle though. I doubt Eggland's Best would want people to really see what their layer hens lives are like. Or that clothing mfrs would want you to watch the video of raccoon dogs being skinned alive in China. Ugh. Anyway, thanks! Off to catch a plane & about 90 other tasks....

likin' that sweet potato pie idea. gonna make them tonight, thanks!

Heather, what about providing cherry tomatoes a couple at a time for games of keep away? Cabbage tetherball, moving the chickens from one area to another so they have fresh land to examine...

So, after all the flaming emails bouncing around earlier this month, and all the emotional wrangling with my mother, we had a fantastic Thanksgiving. Probably one of the best ever.

My niece's boyfriend was there, which we weren't expecting, and Laura's boyfriend for the first time. Although Laura and Lily don't get to see each other that much, they stay in touch and are close. It was nice to see them with their guys. (Both bfs are tall and lanky - they have a similar look, although the girls are like night and day in looks).

We had a lot of laughs, including a bout of hysteria on my part over a slide of my little brother. Everyone stayed over (me/Bobby, Laura/Mike and my older sister/her bf at the same hotel) and we all got together again this morning. I had brought 3 dozen eggs so everyone had scrambled eggs this morning and raved.

It was a fun and loving couple of days. Laura was telling me about how Mike missed his family (his first Thanksgiving not with his mom and sisters) but thought it was great how well we all got along. It made me realize that we are a pretty nice bunch despite my mother's best efforts to create drama. We had a few laughs over the past financial shiRt with my mom but steered clear of controversy. (My sister and brother took a lot of pictures and we all yelled "HELOC" instead of "cheese".)

I was stressed driving up, but it all turned out great! I hope you all had as wonderful a holiday as I did.
