Hello everyone, I am located on Long Island in Laurel Hollow on the North Shore near Oyster Bay. Just got my Chickens on Nov 17th. They are very young, supposedly 10 weeks but my son says much younger. Got them from Clark Farm Business in Higganum, CT. So far so good. Would like to give a shout out to Carolyn.. And would like to connect with local Long Islanders. Will be going to Florida next week. My husband will be tending the chickens while I am gone. Looking forward to your friendship, knowledge and advice.
Welcome! I'm in Greenlawn! Great place you found with loads of nice and knowledgable peeps. Are your birds inside or out yet? If they are that young, they may still need to be kept indoors with a source of heat, especially if they aren't fully feathered. Just asking with concern for the wee lil ones.

Enjoy!!!

Hi Guys,

Sorry I've been quiet, dealing with a really annoying cold that won't leave me alone plus John is away in Texas so I'm holding down the fort with the two little ones alone. I'm going to try to reply to all the open threads... (ha!)

1/ Welcome to Backyard Chickens NY Duck! We are all pretty much chicken owners on this thread although there is one fancy pigeon breeder that pops in occasionally and I think more than a few parrot owners as well. You are certainly welcome to hang out and pick up crochet tips though, lol!

2/ Al, I'm sorry you haven't been feeling well. Did I mention I bought the cookbook for arthritis written by a young top rated chef? I haven't really had time to read it yet but one of the key foods he talks about is parsley. Try a parsley smoothie? I'll look through it tonight and see if I can come up with one or two more appetizing recipes of his to pass on. I hope you can get back on Humera soon.

3/ Maggie I am sorry about your sick birdie. I too don't have anything useful to offer but I do know Terry Golson on HenCam.com recommends a bath in epsom salts when nothing else seems to work. At a minimum it can't hurt while you're waiting for the antibiotics to come in. I also had a pullet, our Speckled Sussex Perry Katie, get very sick for no good reason at all pretty much a month after she started laying. Because she was sweet and because I was just starting out with the chicken keeping I had her to the vet a few times. Long story short when she died we did a necropsy and it was cancer. There wasn't anything we could have done to stop it. Don't beat yourself up too much, things happen occasionally. Here's hoping she makes a full recovery.

4/ Suzanne I may have found a home for Ben. I was at Hilltop Hanover Farms tonight with the girls for their end of season pot luck supper and of course talked the ears off the two young farmers by the chicken shed. They have a flock of 25 hens, they weren't sure what breed they are but I suspect Red Comet and they were looking for a rooster to establish some social order and prevent them from pecking at each other. I emailed the head chicken dude Bret and told him about our thread so he may come and check us out. What I really wish is that I could take Ben after those hawk attacks. I suspect that would be asking too much of my neighbors though.

5/ I am sort of working on a holiday present for the group that entails a visit to the Bronx Zoo. I'm just going to assume that a Saturday is the best day to plan this unless everyone has a weekday that works for them? Basically it would take just about an hour and you would be free to stay at the zoo as long as you wanted afterwards. I hope I can get this together, it was something I had the chance to do for the first time this week and it was just amazing. That's all I can say for now.

I hope I didn't miss anything because that's all the time I have now! There is screaming from the other room now..... argh....

XOXO,
Heather
Hi Heather? Really? Sounds coooool!!!!!!!!!! Count me in.

Welcome, Harborview! We're practically neighbors. I'm in Huntington. This is a great thread. You will find friendship, knowledge and advice in abundance! This is one great group of people. Of course, we WILL need to see pictures of your chickens because we are all chick pic addicts!

This was an interesting article I read this morning on backyard chicken keeping in the UK.

I'd really like to see the actual journal article. Magazines and newspapers do tend to embellish things.what we need is some kind of cooperative extension program here on the Island. Its just not cost effective to bring a sick chicken to a vet ,be charged an wing and leg and come away with misinformation. Unless things have changed, most vet students arent required to take any poultry courses. (Vets out there having graduated after 1985 don't jump down my throat since that's when I left the diagnostic lab). With very few people left there that I know and they themselves drowning in work . I've been having a hard time getting help.
The man that gives a talk at agway during "chick days" is some what knowledgeable and they do advertise that he is a doctor, but he is not a veterinarian. Sorry if I'm venting....

Some local law maker is going to get that article and we will be screwed. No wonder we have to keep things under wraps. I can't let go can I. Just tell me to stop...

Heather, you KNOW you can count me in for anything at the Zoo. Saturdays are great for me, but I can do any day. Unemployment does have its advantages.

I would LOVE to give Ben away to a farm. He's such a beauty. If you think it's appropriate, you can PM me with Bret's email address and I can get in touch directly. And of course, I'll deliver him and use it as an excuse to visit my favorite Westchester Bird Nerd. Thanks for thinking of my boy Ben.

To all the new folks ,please don't let me scare you away. I am not a crazy " soapbox nut".
Welcome again , and bring on the pics.

Donna that was the article I was referring to before. I think it is such a load of craq, designed by commercial farmers to scare off small scale owners. It's also insulting to assume that we don't know as much as the commercial guys. We probably know as much since we at least treat our birds instead of culling them at the slightest symptom. Or how about the egg farms that leave dead birds locked in with their healthy cage mates? I lived in the UK for 2 yrs and so much of their laws made no sense to me. Very reactionary not precautionary. Like when everyone hated pit bulls, they banned the breed from the whole island and tried to have family pets put down. It's still illegal to bring in a pittie. Stupid. They also won't allow you to feed household scraps to chickens because they're afraid of mad cow disease happening again. There's a reason I didn't stay there and it's not just the lousy weather.
