Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

So I'm in Texas now. We have looked at 3 houses and all I can think is that I don't want to move. Can't really tell John or the kids but my I am not handling this as well as I though I would. I just want my cozy house and my chickens forever. Waaaaaa.....don't want to be a grown-up. We liked the complex we saw today but the president of the HOA said no way to hens. I am adjusting, adjusting but oh this is hard. Please promise me that we will all have one last get-together before June?

Heather, that is such a bummer. I suppose it is a challenge to find a chicken friendly neighborhood that also is safe, has good schools, and makes for a reasonable commute. The sussex show is in may, we should plan on going out for lunch or something.

Oh, btw, I made the jump and just bought a hovabator genesis 1588. It has really good reviews and I just couldn't justify the extra 150 for the octagon adv. I hope I made the right choice. I got it directly from GQF and it comes with the universal turner and the quail rails, plus 30 quail eggs. Now, I hadn't planned on quail, but what the hay. Anyone want some quail if I am successful?

I am in so much trouble when that arrives.

Hi All, its been so long, but I havent forgotten you guys. I actually missed you all horribly shortly after sandy. Life has been hectic. I just wanted to check in and say that the girls are big now and I am loving them more than I ever expected all eleven survived my care :)
I am hoping that one of these days life will return to normal and I will have time to read and chat more. Best wishes to you all,

S

Whenever you read this, you'll know I was thinking of you and praying for a speedy return to a normal life. As normal as life is with chickens! When my the rug was pulled out from under my life a couple of years ago, God sent me Gladys, my first chicken. And of course, the obsession grew. But so did the fun!!

We will have a get together fer sure (Texas twang there) before you go. And if I know these ladies (hello Carol) some of us may be showing up at your doorstep. Keep on the lookout for things to love in Texas. Texas Prairie Chickens, perhaps?

Good morning!

Quail! I think you made a good choice. I've had mine going for months straight and as long as it's out of drafts, it's been great. At first it was set up too close to the window due to not having a lot of placement options, but I rearranged the room and it's better now. Recovers temps pretty well according to my thermomenter/hygrometer probe. I did find the recommended water trough to be too humid for my tastes so I use the center ones instead. So a bit of trial and error, but hopefully not too much error. lol

Good luck!

Heather, moving can be difficult enough without having to give up what you love. I hope you find a place more to your liking soon.

Oooh, prairie chickens. I love those. You can actually keep them, but they are hard to find and very expensive. How cool would it be to have them roaming about on their own?

That is one cool bird! Donna you'll like this, the counselor at the elementary school I love has hummingbird feeders out for them. He says they come through spring - fall. He also mentioned that one of the second grade Teachers sells eggs from her own hens. There is a huge garden going through the middle of the school planned by the Texas master Gardeners that each class contributes to every year. Yeah, it was sort of no contest after seeing that and the other school. Both are good schools but as my youngest puts it, mommy you would marry nature if you could. One of the houses we saw was on a lake, and I immediately noticed a tree down by itself. I thought, huh, that's weird because I know it's not snow damage. Then I looked closer and it was a beaver! Shoot I can't put the picture in with the iPad but it's on instagram. There were a whole bunch of them once I started looking. I thought it was so cool, but city slicker hubby was like, Aaa! No way, it'll flood the basement! Lol I am calmer now, feeling better, and I can't wait to see you all out here in October for the big poultry show. Definitely let's do May again, and Christine I really want to see Space Zoo this time with the girls. Xoxo
