Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Sallysec, I'm so sorry you're going through this! My fiance blew out some eggs and filled them with horrendous wasabi horseradish sauce from Stop & Shop.

He also hung a piece of cardboard to block the coop window. No more egg eating. May this all be cleared up for your girls soon!

Goldeneggtees, what color cochins did you hatch? How many besides the RIR? Congrats on your hatch!

Take a few good photographs of the bullseye.  Up close shot and whole body part shot.   Today's newspaper in one of the shots, showing the date.   Nothing like documented proof that you didn't "imagine" the bullseye. Bring the photos to the doctore.  Also, bring printouts from the web on why the extended antibiotics are necessary.  Bring an adult with you to be a witness to the doctor refusing your request for the meds.  If the doc plays the ambivalence card, tell him that you understand that there are two acceptable views on the matter and that as the parent responsible for this child, your vote MUST count.  Medical treatment choices don't have to be made on the basis of which ones are used more than any others, the choice just has to be a reasonable, acceptable choice among doctors in the community.  I'm not a lawyer;  I'm just sayin'...

Carolyn, you are my kind of gal!

So, we went to the doctor, who said almost immediately that they were going to treat him. However, due to his young age (7) they cannot prescribe Doxy, and they don't need to give him 6 weeks worth of a/b's either. (I did check on this with my Lymie friends and they agreed) he is on 21 days of Amoxil.

The doctor said he should not show any sign of Lyme. I will be making a few calls in the morning to make sure the proper protocol is definitely being followed.

Thanks for all the kind words!

Hopefully one round of antibiotics may do the trick. Be a momma bear and do whatever you need, in order to get your son the meds that he needs. My hubby has had Lyme in the past and lots of folks in this area have caught it. Two summers ago, my son graduated from high school and caught mono and erlichiosis (tick borne). He was in the ER and then hospitalized for a week. Lost 10 pounds almost overnight. It was awful. He is ok now...but what an ordeal. I'll say a prayer for your little guy.

I've missed hundreds of posts since BYC stopped working correctly on Intenet Explorer. I can't go back to my first unread post anymore. I have to jump around and try to scroll backwards thru the pages. I have given up on doing that...so I've missed alot. I'm not even sure if Heather has moved already?

Lindsey and I have 6 eggs in lockdown, due tomorrow...only one looks promising...bleh! We also have eggs we set on Saturday and new eggs arriving on Thursday. Why don't we have our own little hatch along? See what kind of success we have hatching as a group?

Hello all. I was wondering if I could once again ask for some help. One of my 8 week old CRC chicks began with the normal yellow protruding comb but now it is turning brown unlike her sister (we hope) that has red comb and waddles already. I have only been able to ascertain it may be a fungus but I look to you all since you may have seen or experienced the same thing. I tried to post this yesterday but I don't see it , so I'm trying again.
Thanks to those in advance for your help.

My broody hatched 2 gold laced, 3 either blue or splash and then the one Rhode Island Red which I really didn't want. I promise to post some pics, just have to hook my camera up.

Goldeneggtees, those are some gorgeous colors, love golden laced and splash! I'm looking forward to pictures. :)

Mammo, I'm not sure what that is, but do the girls seem healthy to you? Eating and drinking okay? Poos normal?

Good Morning, peeps! How is everyone on this beautiful, crisp sunny morning? My seedlings are growing, my tomatoes are flowering, and my roo is CROWING LOUDLY. Oy vey! I'm really hoping to figure out a way to keep him, but Danny keeps hearing it, and is insistent that we don't need negative attention. He's right-we have an extra chicken or five over the town limit, so we could get caught with those and have to get rid of all of them. If anyone wants a REALLY sweet and snuggly boy blue/grey silkie, let me know. I deliver.

My little man no longer has the bullseye, and as long as it stays away, we're all good. I'm calling the Stony brook Lyme clinic this morning to make sure the 3 weeks of Amoxi is enough to prevent any further Lyme progression. If they say it's correct, maybe I'll sleep tonight. I going on about 3 hours in 4 days, so I'm slightly more than half out of my mind, but until this is resolved-I simply can't sleep-my mind is spinning.

I am supposed to get my Black Australorp eggs on Thursday-hopefully whatever was going on in the Bethpage mail center is resolved, because I need eggs producers, and Lovey needs to sit on something. I'm praying that I get at least 3-4 hens, but with my luck as it is...I may get 10 roos. (A huge buff orp can sit 10 eggs, right?)

Thank goodness I didn't have to put up an argument. I know this doctor for years, he's an old fashioned kind of guy, but honestly, I think he's done his homework since we live in a really high risk area.

I hope you get a good hatch. Maybe some of the peeps are just being quiet until they emerge?

Advice, ideas, thoughts? This is a bit personal, but I'll share here, hoping for your perspective.

I am legally blind with a fair bit of residual vision left. (I be-bop around with a white cane if I'm on new territory) I do all the normal chicken chores stuff just fine, even caring for the baby chicks I've got in the brooder, who'll be moving outside this weekend.

We've got a gorgeous, stunning Barnevelder who's a bit of a bully to the girl in the pecking order below her, and we have small, young bantams to intergrate in the next few weeks. I don't have the visual acuity to see if/when Gertie may possibly harass a bantam chick too much. I am carefully considering re-homing her. This is difficult, because she's such a mellow, quiet, good girl otherwise. Her beautiful eggs are truly copper-shelled. She eats from my hand, amazingly doesn't scratch the lawn much, but is a decent forager otherwise. Anyway, I'm anxious about re-homing her, because she's such a dear, is a good layer, gorgeous, and... I'm worried about other people's "chicken math." I don't want her to end up in an overcrowded pen.

Am I worrying too much? There's no way to know that someone doesn't overcrowd, except to take their word for it.

I want Gertie to be happy! I love her.

She may just not be right for our situation (we need to keep 2 bantams from this hatch, and they won't be separated once intergrated)

Gertie in the fall, before she started laying (she started laying in March I think)...

If Gertie is re-homed, we would need a new laying hen. Due to my vision loss, I'd appreciate a mellow, calm hen that ideally would be friendly enough to sometimes enjoy briefly being held and spoiled a bit. So, mellow and friendly. What about a Buff Orpington? Or perhaps a Golden Comet? Would a Buff Orpington chick raised with careful regular handling come to enjoy it occasionally? I have no idea where to find Buff Orpington chicks or Golden Comet chicks just yet. I'm still thinking this through... it's a lot of changes. (we have a tiny, stable flock, and they are family to us

Thanks for any input!
