Hello all and welcome to all newcomers. I don't come on here often but the regulars on this thread are awesome and always willing to help.
I started with my chicks on April 16th which I got from Agway in Riverhead. I had gotten 6 hens...or so I had hoped, but alas, I have a roo. He hasn't crowed yet but Pluckyew is showing all signs and colors of being a Columbian Rock Cross MALE. What are the chances he doesn't crow so I can keep him? On the other hand, if we do lose Plucky my wife said I can get another to replace him. This suits me fine because as you all know, that means I can get 2 more because you don't want the newcomer to be lonely in that separation period...hehehehe.
I'll attempt once again to add pics as I know you all love them so and I don't mind showing them off...lol.

Toxic chicken, your baby blue ameraucana chick is adorable! How's the silkie Momma doing?

Rosie, have fun camping! The turkey poults sound adorable!

Anyone else getting mosquito-bitten while doing chicken chores out there?  It seems to be a very itchy time right now. Hoping everyone is doing well, and their chickens, too!
my silkie mom is vicous to the other hens. I have to keep her and her babies in a puppy play pen because she attacks and then gets her butt kicked. My other 2 moms are doing good their chicks are already part of the flock. When I put treats out they all come and eat together. I don't understand why my silkie is starting fights. She is still sweet to me but other hens nope.

The Mosquitos are everywhere. I look like one giant bite. They are all over me. Giant welts. I don't like to use bug spray but I've started covering myself in it when I go outside cause I can't take it anymore. Been living on Benadryl for 2 weeks now.

Omg I love those turkey babies !!
I seriously need to move so I can have Roos and turkeys and ducks and dwarf goats. It's so weird to my family cause growing up I was a 'city girl' all the way. Now I want to live in a tiny country town. It's my chickens fault. :)

Anyone looking for a good emergency kit go to firstststatevetsupply.com and check out Docs kit. Well worth the $25 he charges. A must for everyone with chickens.

I can not emphasize enough, how good this kit is and what a bargain it is. It contains not only medication for emergencies....but it also has vitamins, probiotics etc to keep your birds healthy.

Hello All,
I am a newbie around here and to chickens. I have just finished building my coop, and will be picking up my four girls tomorrow. I would like to purchase Sweet PDZ to use on poop boards, something I have read about on BYC. Does anyone have a ny source for this? I live in southern westchester, Mt Vernon. I have to be out on Long Island this weekend, and dont mind driving.

I also wonder if anyone here does the Deep litter method? That was my plan. Any thoughts? Insights?

Thanks so much!

Hi bqfarmgirl, and welcome to the thread. I use the deep litter method and find it works very well for me. The key is to make sure you have plenty of ventilation. I can go the entire winter without cleaning out the coop. I use the smell test to gauge the time to change the litter. Make sure you do turn it once in a while to see if it is too moist underneath. If you smell ammonia, then its time to change.
