Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hi all! I wish I had been on vacation. Just busy and becoming more iPad dependent, which is less byc friendly than my net book. I did go to Albany for a few daysto help my sister out after surgery, but it wasn't really a vacation...

We took Ed back to NJ, so now I don't have the blue americauna I wanted. Pauline integrated well into the flock at long last so for now there I relative peace.

I'm interested. Serious questions though:

If someone does report the roo to the Town, what will they do?

Do Roos need to sleep in a seperate coop?

And if I let my girls free-range all day will they know to return to the coop to lay or are they going to waste those eggs under the ivy vines that they love to hide in?

I keep mine locked in the coop&pen Untill about 2pm because every now and then they decide to hide their eggs under a bush. Some of the girls always go back to the nest box but I have a few trouble makers.

I'm in love with this little CL Roo. Can't keep him but he's going to a great home.

I have very sad news.

My little BCM pullet, Sweet Brown and one of the tiny hatchlings came up missing yesterday. My daughter let them out and locked them up at night, and those two weren't in there when I opened the hen house. I'm beside myself-she was my little singleton that thought she was a person. My sons and daughter and husband have searched the entire block with no trace.

The little chick that's missing was one of Lovey's, so now there's two chicks between Miss Boots and Lovey so they are co-parenting both. It's really cute, but I'm so sad, I think the charm isn't quite getting through right now.

Ugh. I know chickens die, and I know these things happen, my daughter is really sad and upset, but this is awful.

Soprano and Montana, the poults, have been soothing me, but every now and then I just go outside and then remember that little girl is gone.

If someone reports it, they will come and take a look. No warning. If you have more than 6 hens, you might want to reconsider, since they can also make you get rid the excess hens. Brookhaven stinks and will come back to make sure you have adhered to the law.

Roos sleep with the hens, I believe. Mine lay eggs under bushes sometimes-even if they're a few days old-they're still good. (The eggs, that is)

Rosie, sorry your babies are missing.

Perfect end to the week....went inside to get some ice tea and came back out to find a nice present left on my iPad from one of the girls. And no it wasn't an egg. Thank goodness my son bought me one of those leather covers for it. It that good luck or only when a bird poops on you when it's airborne ?

Welcome back Suzanne, sorry it wasn't a vacation. How was Lyle Lovett? Richard is seeing him tonight.

Needless to say, I wasn't quite sure if you definately got a girl or not.
The problem is getting him back here, I am out on the Island by Riverhead.
Where are you?

Hi Roberta I'm in lower Westchester and I could drive him out to Riverhead if you give me directions. Do you have any other females I could purchase because when I give Blackie back I will only have Nutmeg left and I would like some company for her?

What kind of bird is Nutmeg so I know who will be best suited for her?
I'll be in Staten Island on Saturday if that would be easier....
But not my car, this should be fun going to a baby shower with a chicken in my SILs car Haha!
