Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I was shocked. I wish I'd have gotten a better look. It definitely wasn't a turkey as it flew into the sky over RFC and disappeared around the bend. I don't know what it was. All that really stood out was the size and the blunt tail feathers.
It breaks my heart to think of cooping them up but I just couldn't get over how afraid they were. I've never heard that noise before.

There are pheasants around here, I even had one in my yard with the peepers on. I couldn't get close enough to get them off, but it means they are close by and there has to be a breeder if it has the peepers on...

OR... They like the look and have figured out how to use amazon.....

I see them all the time when driving to football in Shoreham. It's cool because at the beginning of the season, the poults are small and the parents have to really watch them, and you watch as they get bigger and more independent.

I don't see them in my yard, but we're loaded with deer and woodpeckers lately.
Does your son play football? I coach on the east end.

OK so Richard is supposedly going to Chicago on Sat for a conference. Maybe , maybe not you never know with him. If so what do you guys think of an impromptu get together at my house (more like back yard) . I have to drive him to the airport Saturday morning. I won't know before then. If he goes he' ll be gone til Tues. we could do it Sat, Sun, or Monday . It could be a little BBQ. I'll keep everyone posted as to his plans. He's not a very social person and he likes his weekends . That's the only reason I would do it without him here.

Oh I wish I could! We leave for Indian Island again on Sunday.

Went outside this evening to catch a large bird flying out of my yard and my girls in their coop early, eerily quiet. When I approached them they began making a sound that I can only compare to a cat's purr...but shrill.
Was this a hawk? It appeared to be the size of a hen and had a longish, brown and speckled white tail with a blunt end.
What was this noise? Had it been intimidating them? Will it come back? Is it legal for me to shoot the **** thing?
Sounds like a goshawk maybe. The noise the hens made was a "be quiet" trill they make when danger is around. It will definitely be back.
