Thank you, that helps. I wish I could stop the sneezing. I'm reluctant to start the antibiotic I got yesterday at Agway. I did use the vetrx, but not yet today. The other stuff seems disease specific from what I was reading
There are several posts on BYC describing the use of Oxine in humidifiers. Different techniques used but all seemed to be an almost miraculous cure for upper respiratory infections. I haven't read those posts for quite a while (couple of years) but I remember some folks put the sick chicken in a pet carrier and then partially covered it and then kept the humidifier pointed toward it for three hours at a time, several times a day. Some did it all night long; some alternated an hour at a time all day, etc. Most of the posts gave dosage proportions of how much Oxine to put in the water. Most used the technique for at least 3 or 4 days. Just be sure to use the Oxine without adding any sort of acid or vinegar into the Oxine/water solution.

If you add acid, you turn the Oxine into a toxic disinfectant suitable for decontaminating a room or equipment, etc.

But plain ole Oxine and water is a healthy solution for sanitzing everyday stuff and for misters/humidifiers for sneezing/coughing chickens and for everyday use in drinking water systems to keep the water potable and the pipes clean. You can go on the Oxine manufacture's web page and learn more than my poor memory can serve up.

Hope this helps.

A good way to eliminate mites and lice is to apply Adams Flea and Tick spray by placing one drop under each wing, on the base of the neck and under the vent (do not spray). In addition, you must strip the coop and replace with clean shavings. It helps to also spray the coop or use dust to kill off any bugs remaining in there. The next day, bathe with Dawn dish detergent to remove as many bugs as possible. In 10 days, repeat in order to kill any bugs that hatch from the eggs.

When we bathe birds, we put them in the kitchen sink, partially filled with warm water. Using a cup or the sprayer, we thoroughly wet the bird starting at the top of the head and working our way down. Next, apply Dawn directly to the bird and work it in... or dilute some in a squirt bottle and then apply all over the bird. Rinse with warm water. Then, we add some vinegar to a cup of warm water to rinse off any soap residue. Lastly, we add a bit of Downy to a cup of water and give a final rinse.

We wrap the birds up in towels, like a burrito, to absorb much of the water. Then we put them in a bathtub and hang a heat lamp from the shower rod to let them dry. It takes awhile, but they dry and fluff up on their own. You can use a hair dryer in place of a heat lamp if you have just one bird. If it is warm and sunny outside, you can also put the birds out to dry in the sun on a grassy area.

BTW, Be prepared to get wet along with the birds! LOL

Morning all,
Happy summer Carolyn glad you're back.

Mammo, good morning, I feel terrible for you I'm very concerned about your other girls.Iknow this might come off as harsh but I now have to add my two cents.
I would return her. it has only been a little over a week and you have invested a lot of money on drugs and a great deal of time. I would tell them that you spoke with or brought her to a vet . That she is ill and is in deplorable condition. That you have kept her isolated from the rest of your flock and can not risk wide spread infection.
Unless you are changing your clothes and scrubbing down after you handle her, you are at risk of contaminating your other girls.
It is sad that these people are keeping chickens like this and worse selling them. You could tell them that if the chicken dies and you send it to a lab to be necropsied there could be an investigation. It won't go this far. I always think of the extreme.
As I'm writing this I still don't know whether I should. If you need my help let me know. Carol

Thank you all!! Very, very helpful and much appreciated. I have thought of returning her and wondered how they wouldn't have checked for issues before selling her to me. What's worse is they said to only keep quarantined for just a day or two...I am so happy I listened to you all. I do not go to my existing girls after handling the sick one. I change my clothes and shoes and wash my hands and arms. I so badly want to get this girl better because now it's a challenge...must be the athlete in me...lol.
Thanks again and if any other advise, please keep it coming. Have a great day all...gotta get ready for work, the people of Long Island need to buy tile...lol

This is my two chicks that hatched in July...growing so fast outside in their little brooder by themselves. I can't believe how quickly they have feathered in comparison to the hatchery chicks I kept in the house. Is it just because they are outside that they would grow quicker?

Mites and coccidiosis are the top two causes of chicken deaths. It is really important to get rid of the mites and lice. Those darn bugs will spread like wildfire to the other birds. I had the misfortune of buying a flock of 5 birds earlier this year, that were misrepresented by the seller as to their quality, coloring, age and supposed lack of faults.....AND they were shipped with mites! Ugh! If you don't quickly and carefully get the mites under control it may turn ino a long drawn out "Battle of the Bugs".

Thanks little critters. The amount of bugs has gotten smaller and she is still quarantined. Even when the other girls are free ranging the closest they can get is about 6 feet the closest separated by 2 fences. I dusted her bedding last evening and also the ground with her dirt area, which is probably washing away as I type this.
What over the counter medicine would you all recommend for a girl that is only sneezing with no other symptoms? Yesterday I put more VetRX in her drinking water as directions state as well as on top of her head, under her wings and dropped in her nostrils. I have the antibiotic that Agway sells but have not started it yet since I'm not sure if it's disease specific, but getting to the point of doing it anyway. I would like to have said I did everything I could for her if something bad does happen.
