Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hi everyone. It's been a while since I've posted but have lurked and enjoyed everyone else's posts. Looks like we, in NYC , lucked out with no snow. In prepping Saturday, we put up a new and larger tarp over the bigger coop. Looks terrific and ready for any weather. (ya hear that, honey? Great job!).
Looks like we are getting fertilized eggs due to the two roos that will soon be rehomed. Bought a small incubator and will see what happens. I'm so nervous...first time! :) Wish us luck.

Welcome,
Jump right in ,no need to lurk around here.
Good luck with the eggs.
I'm glad you put up that tarp cause now we won't get anymore snow. Thanks.....

Hi Guys,

Wow, Carol, that was some ordeal you had to go through there. As if no sewer line wasn't enough to deal with, you add on bureaucratic paperwork and nonsense. Glad it's finally over for you!

Rosie, good to hear from you too! I'm sorry I don't have time to check in as much as before, it's just a lot to figure out where I'm going these days. Thank god for GPS!

Tina, glad your daughter's apartment is fixed up, but I'm sorry for your predator losses. This brutal winter is going to bring out all the "baddies" when the first real thaws hit, everyone be cautious when free ranging. I maybe mentioned this, but not too many of the feed stores here vaccinate the chicks. They just really don't expect them to survive a full life-span. It's brutal but where we are it's just more realistic. My friend had a bobcat rip one of her silkies through the pen wire, and she lives in a very suburban area.

Pip, I'm so glad you love the chicken life as must as I do! I knew I was on to something. :) Please give everyone my love. Didn't I tell you this was a great group of ladies?

There is a wonderful feed store here (plus Tractor Supply) that always has chicks, lots of varieties. I have a very hard time walking away every time I go in there! It is so nice to be in a place where I can drive 10mins and be around other chicken people. I am happy with the three I have now, only 2 are laying and I'm still just getting pullet size eggs. If I can *control* myself, I can get chicks next year so that at least I'm staggered for egg production. That's a pretty big if!

We have a bunch of landscaping projects going on, I had to rip out dozens of these Knockout Roses because they were all infected with that Rosette Virus. I'm putting in a variety of pollinator attractor shrubs instead because that virus is everywhere down here. I haven't been able to plot out the backyard, so no big veggie garden this year. I'm just going to put in a big trough for an herb garden. I did plant a blackberry cane and a fig tree but between the Bouvier chewing on them and the freezing sleet I'm not sure if we'll be getting anything from them. I'm living vicariously through you guys. I did try the potato bag and it worked great for me. The girls loved pulling them out when they were ready. I'd love to try doing a straw bale garden too, that looked super easy for potatoes. Maybe I can try tomatoes. John is trying hard to keep my country girl ways under control or at least out of sight from the new neighbors, but the "redneck" in me comes out no matter what, lol.

We have had many, many, many snow days this year because of the icy driving conditions here. People just drive way too fast, and there isn't any salting or sanding going on. It's frustrating since I know in NY it would be a non-issue. I love my kids but man.... between them being actually sick and vomiting and what not and then me being sick.... I am really ready for spring. So ready.

Crystal, the Red Sex Link -she's laid two wrinkly eggs (I think) but not a real one yet.

Sky, the Wyandotte

The bulk seeds for sale at D&L - Couldn't you just die? I wish had some beds ready!!

Right before the giant slushy hail storm hit.

Plus chickens, of course.

Hey everyone, just a quick question: I'm on the hunt for a good place to get organic feed and was wondering, for those of you who feed organic, where you get it from and prices? Trying to find the cheapest place of course and also trying to find someone who carries organic flock feed or an all purpose. Feed barn in Mahopac only has a good price for their organic layer ($28 I think), but their grower price is almost $10 more. I'll probably be buying bulk in the future. I'm in Westchester would drive pretty far for bulk. Thanks!

Does tractor supply carry organic feed?

My little Russian Orloff died. This really sucks.

Rosie, the guy wanting the chicks hasn't gotten back to me. Thanks anyway.

Beautiful girls heather.

Carol, I am so sorry to hear about your Orloff. Does it look like anything particular or just the cold did a number on her?

Tractor supply does sometimes have organic feed. If you buy 20 bags (1/2 ton), they will give you 5% off as well. At least the TSC in Sussex does. I was talking to them today about it.
