Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

OMG they are here already! Can you believe it? Less than 24 hrs from hatch. All survived and are very active. We are in cuteness overload here. I will get picks up as soon as I get a chance. The Norwegian Jaerhon chicks are the cutest things ever!

That's great!! Enjoy.
Maybe one year I can gets chicks of my own...

Whenever you are ready... lol. You are welcome to borrow my heat lamp. I think I might try the heating pad brooder for the next batch. I think it will be nice to not have the light on all the time. I tried a ceramic heat lamp (heat, no light), but I never could get the temps right.

Uuuugh. I have chirper. Ever have one of those chicks that just cheeps constantly? I checked her over, no pasty butt, full crop, no apparent injury, nice and warm in there. I seem to get one in every batch. I think she bonded with my DD and now she chirps her little head off until she sees her back in the room. I guess we won't have much sleep tonight. They go in the big basement brooder tomorrow, but I wanted to keep them upstairs until I was sure everyone was eating and drinking. This reminds me why I had "build outdoor brooder tractor next year" in my notes... I can even hear them when they are in the basement brooder.

Congratulations on your new babies Christine.

I'm out of control; I'm having another raised bed built. My strawberry patch went in yesterday. I never ordered from Stark Bros. before but the plants were beautiful, and they sent extra.

Where did the duck avatar come from I did not change it. Oh no is this a sign.....

Going to the chick fest in S. Salem , hope to see you there....

I have been wondering about stark bros. They sell the paw paw and persimmon trees I want. Maybe I will give them a try.

I want a strawberry patch too... I did buy a few bags of crowns, so now I have to decide where they go. Maybe a new raised bed. I have about 30 left over cinder blocks and some dirt in the topsoil pile. The question is, do I feel like lugging and shoveling?

Yesterday we (Lilly and I) got in 3 kinds of lettuce, 2 kinds of carrots, and collards. I will succession plant them, so we do small patches of each. At least I have everything in I need for the next few weeks (I think I will do Kale and Chard today). Then it is back to taking over the weed/briar patch to get those squash in. I have a few weeks before they need to be in, thank goodness.

I want to go to chickenfest, but I think I might swing through the plumbsock auction first... not sure yet. Of course, the chickenfest is only from 9 - 1 so I am not sure if I can do both. The preview starts at 8 am, so I might swing through and decide if there is anything that I really, really, must have, then if not, drive on to S. Salem. This has me wanting to go to the auction "large assortment of crocks & jugs, Barnwood, beams, flooring, many lots of antiques,". Carol, you and I are of the same ilk, so you know what kind of torment I am feeling about which one to go to... lol.

Must. Have. These...

Today if FINALLY got my lettuce, carrots, Swiss chard and onions in the ground, even with my tiller breaking down on me. Nothing like turning the soil and adding compost by hand, lol.

My chicks come in less than two weeks. My wife and I are very excited. These are our first. I've done lots of reading on this and other sites, so hopefully we will have everything under control. Fingers crossed!
