Hi SMKCHICK I am in Commack. There is a feed store * Harvest Pride * 639 Old Willets Path in Hauppauge 631 928-8888 (call for hours) if you want to get feed a little closer. There are a few of us chicken people very close to you

Roberta, you are right. It is good for an emergency. Our temps went to -12F a few times this past winter and the birds do surprisingly well. As long as they stay dry and the coop is well vented but not drafty they hang tough. Now power for a fan is a great idea. Heat does in more chickens than cold does. Al believe me I was worried the first winter with chickens but many people on BYC assured me they would be fine.

I have a few dummies that just wouldn't stay inside when it got real cold one winter. They have the combs (or lack of) to prove it. My SQ japanese bantams look like gamefowl that have been dubbed! Silly boys!

Hi lichick! Wow, Commack. I can practically see you from here! Thanks for the info about Harvest Pride. I'll check it out. I go out to Hampton Bays and/or Southold to visit friends every couple of weeks so the trip to Riverhead isn't a big deal, but I'd love to check out Harvest Pride. There's a poultry farm in Greenlawn where I got my first couple of sacks of feed when I first found Gladys, but I needed to find a better-stocked store.

Have you had chickens for long? I'm worried about the first winter. I have 3 chicks who are a week old and am wondering if it will be too cold for them when they're out of the brooder.

Post some pics?

Hey, come on! I remember when Agway was in Huntington, too. But I can only remember back to when gas was .50 cents a gallon. And cigarettes were .50 a pack!

I was reading the thread about heating the coop in winter. My allegedly uninvolved DP ("CHICKENS???") keeps asking me if they'll be all right over the winter. How do the clucks handle the LI winters?

Pics, please!! I always want to see other people's flocks.

Used to go to Wilkens farm every Fall! There are lots of apple picking places down here but it's been a while. I love this time of year. I'm a teacher, so it's always a time for new beginnings. Unfortunately, I was laid off this year, so now chickens are my new beginning.

I rescued a Black Star (black sex link?) who's approximately 13 weeks old. Apparently, due to something called "chicken math" I then ordered 3 chicks - a Barred Rock (Wanda), a Golden Buff (Shirley) and a Black Australorp (Aretha). My daughter and I named the rescue Gladys, so the other 3 are her backup singers and needed R&B names!

Here are pics of Gladys and the Pips (Peeps?)

Okay, I'm convinced. No heat, except for a lightbulb. Hey Roberta, what do we do when they outlaw incandescent bulbs over 60 watts in a year or so?

It's getting cold, and it's raining right now. When is it going to end? I've never seen so much rain for so many days.

Hi Smkchick, and welcome. Those chicks are adorable. Have to keep my wife away from pics like that or we'll wind up with way too many chickens. Already had that happen with dogs. We're up to four.
