My brother raises bees up in Buffalo. He has two hives (year 2) and harvested 105 lbs. of honey. He loves his girls like we love ours! Harvesting the honey looks like a project, but you don't actually have to handle the bees.

He's trying to get a thread going in the Backyard Herds website.

Well I'm gonna sighn up for the bee keeping classes. It's from long island bee keepers. They have them at several locations.
Holtsville , riverhead, st James, and Huntington. It's a once a month class from feb through oct. They help you get set up with bees and teach you everything you need to do at different times of the year. Sounds interesting.

Keep us posted with that. I'd love to hear about it. I wish I could do bees, but Bobby's allergic. If you hear me say I'm setting up a hive, you know he's ticked me off!

First, a question. Who on this thread is from East Moriches? I think we have a mutual acquaintance.

Next, a story. Bobby told me today Gladys was chasing him around the yard squatting at him. He scratched under her wings and she wouldn't leave him alone after that. I think I'm jealous...

Finally, an update. We've been keeping the girls in until noon, or until an egg appears, whichever is earlier. So far Gladys has been laying just before 10am. This morning, Aggie was making such a racket, I could hear her while doing the dishes in the kitchen. I was sure she laid her first egg, but nothing so far.

I guess when she starts chasing Bobby around we'll know it's time!

My mom said she saw a HUGE hawk or eagle today.

I think I might have to keep my chickens penned up all the time.

I live 2 houses away from a wild life refuge. Deer, wild turkey, raccoons, fox, and apparently hawks and eagles too.

I had a hard time narrowing it down to the 3 I ordered. One of the ones I passed up was a Rhode Island Red, which I wound up getting from a kindhearted soul who was ever so slightly (ahem) over the limit and who shall remain nameless. You know who you are!

I'm planning on getting another 2 in the spring. I want a Silver Laced Wyandote and a Speckled Sussex. And who knows? There might be one or two who put me so slightly (ahem) over the limit!

My "chicks" are now so big I can't tell them from the older girls.
