Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Wow it sure got quiet in here. Just an update, I replaced the light switch in the coop with a programmable timer. I have it coming on at 4 am and off at 8am and on again at 5 pm and back off at 9 pm. It's been going 4 days now and I now get 4 eggs per day as apposed to 1 every other day. I gotta say it is hilarious to look in their coop window at 8:30 in the evening and see the girls having their own little party. Is everyone ready for the snow tonight? They are predicting 4 to 8 inches for my area.

Rich, I'm still getting an egg a day out of our girls. One may miss on occasion, but very rarely. I think it is the southern exposure that gives them a long enough day.

A light on at night in a coop is a funny looking thing. A TV flickering through the window would really be hilarious.

Don't want to even think about the snow. We're getting the same 4-8 inches here. I was getting used to a snowless winter.

Yeah, it has been kind of quiet. Guess the winter doldrums are settling in.

We got 17 eggs today, the girls are starting to pay the rent after freeloading all winter.
Hubby just put his snow tires on, I wanted to hold off on mine for a few days.
Maybe if it snows bad enough, I will use it as an excuse to NOT go in.

Al, we used to get an egg a day when our chickens were young. I think age has a lot to do with it aside from shorter daylight. Alan has 24 8 month old hens that are giving him 22 to 24 a day. He has kept our egg bin full while our girls were on a by the books work stoppage.
Roberta, how many hens do you have? 17 is a good amount of eggs.

Bobby and I spend a lot of time laughing about what they must be talking about on the roost at night.

We've been getting 2 for 2 pretty consistently. Once in a while someone will skip a day, but that's fine. I think Wanda, the Barred Rock, will be the first of the "chicks" to start laying. I've noticed significant comb/wattle development over the last few days. I think Rhonda is still adjusting to her new surroundings, so she may wait a bit. But I find her in the nest a lot.

Gonna put on my boots and go take some video of the girls first encounter with snow. We have a couple of inches here and it's still coming down. Sorry all, but I love the snow. February baby.

They must not get a lot of snow in Rhode Island. Agatha is standing in the coop squawking her head off. She didn't even come out for a kale treat. Gladys is walking around the backyard like she owns it. Which of course she does...
