Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hi, Roberta. I mentioned the hatching attempt in the photos from this past weekend ... here's the details:

I also bought a small incubator from Stromberg's, and am going to attempt to hatch some eggs. If any of them are successful, I should have some chicks on March 9! I put in four Japanese Bantam eggs (two from Tammy, two from Loretta), and one Plymouth Rock. Not sure if the Rock egg is fertilized ... since she just started laying, it may not be, though I have noticed Porter "bothering" her, so maybe ... lol.

It's one of those small incubators that fits 4-5 eggs. I noticed they actually have them at the Agway in Riverhead for about the same as I paid from Stromberg's (about 20 bucks). Figured that's enough investment to try it out and see what happens! If it works out, and I hatch some more, I may be offering some chicks up to the board before long!

Well I had my sit down with the Orthopedic surgeon and I am scheduled to have shoulder surgery on March 28th. Not looking forward to it at all.
Rich, sorry to hear you have to do the surgery. I'm sure it's not what you wanted to hear, but if it fixes the shoulder then you gotta do it.

Thanks Al, I am looking forward to the surgery so I could feel better but at the same time It is the last thing I want to do. Kinda crazy way of looking at it.

Rich, sitting on the other side of the surgery, I can tell you the recovery is brutal. Saw the orthopedist today, a day early. 2 days of weeping in pain... Turns out I took out the sling brace too early. sling alone is apparently not good enough. ASK questions! doc gave me some at home exercises to start. PT rx too. looking forward to feeling better....

Sorry to hear about all the pain you are in Suzanne. I did hear the recovery is brutal. Why did you remove the sling early? My problem is two fold, there is calcium deposits that need to be removed and also a repair to the rotator cuff tear. My surgery will be arthroscopic. Was yours also arthroscopic?

It seems that, if it feels better, then alot of people start using the affected body part without letting it heal.
Arthroscopic surgery is fabulous, but it gives us an artificial feeling of "it's better" and they should not go back to normal activities.
I have had many surgeries. Take it easy. Just because it looks better, it isn't, it needs time to heal.
And don't be surprised, a few days of alot of pain is a trade off for years of being able to use your body normally again.

Suzanne, I hope you feel better soon.

Rich, don't worry, give it some time.

And you really need to do the PT. It sucks doing it in an office, in front of everyone.
Just do a little at a time on your own, it will speed everything up.

We are all getting old, and falling apart.
We have each other to help talk thru the healing process.
And chickens!

Hello from the REAL upstate, Syracuse! I enjoy reading your thread, as DH and I have ties there. He grew up in Huntington, and he and my older son spent much of a year about 5 years ago trimming a house in Millbrook.

But what had me write is the shoulder surgeries. DH had the surgery a few years ago and yes it was uncomfortable, a recliner is the best way to sleep in the beginning, and that is not very good. But the biggest thing is that it is important to follow the directions about movement etc. As wonderful as everyone is, we all tend to heal the way our doctors predict, and there is no award for doing things early. The penalty of rushing your recovery is an incomplete recovery, which to my mind means you would have gone through the pain and inconvenience for nothing. The reward is for a complete recovery, and that takes time and physical therapy, not repeated reinjuries.

You all seem like " good eggs" and it tickles me that there are chicken people and chickens on Long Island, so I am telling it like it is! I want to think of you all cheerfully chasing chickens and toting straw bales with fully functioning arms in 6 months or so!

My grandfather lived in Poughkeepsie in his later years in the 50s and 60s...Aunt Gertrude lived in Pawling, and as my cousin Bill says, we have a lot of DNA in the Fishkill Rural Cemetary...
So, I'll keep checking on you and wish you good health and happy chickens and clean coops.

Susan
