Rich, how many times have we told you not to kiss the chickens on the lips?!!

Hi Chicken Dude! First of all, just wanted to say, I share your enthusiasm for Buffs Orps, they are to me the best birds you can get, so sweet and friendly! As a matter of fact, I am writing a children's book about one of mine as we speak!

Having said that, I do also have an Australorp (Betty) that I swear has been reincarnated. She is extremely sensible and sweet, easy going, never afraid and will fall asleep with both eyes and make soft cooing noises when I hold her. It's like she's trying to talk.

Anyway, about your bird, I have never heard mine make a noise quite like the one your hen is making. I have heard mine sneeze and make a very strange noise when they get scratch caught somewhere it shouldn't be. When they are eating too fast, this seems to happen. Could it be your bird has/had something caught in it's throat or nasal passage? Hope it's nothing serious and it goes away quickly.

I got this antique print from Cassell for Wrights Illustrated book of Poultry, printed about 1890-1900. It came with the pages that talk about the origin of the Buff Orps in England. So very cool, can't wait to have it framed!

Funny you mention something caught in the nasal passage. My youngest son pick a large basket full of some weeds and gave them to the girls. It started right after they ate them. You might be on to something there.
That is a great print.

Donna, only 24 days til our new babies hatch and I get my first BO.

I have decided to be a grownup and not spend over $200 to hatch a Lavender Orpington. Not now, anyway. I got as far as the day of the end of the auction, and even ordered the incubator. Then I decided I was being stupidly obsessive and canceled everything. I have chicks coming in 25 days (but who's counting?) and am in the process of designing/building a coop from scratch. AND I'm probably getting laid off in June. What was I thinking???

I'm going to make a really nice brooding box for the babies' arrival. Hopefully, the new coop will be finished by the time they're ready to go outside. I can put a separate pen in for them until the big girls accept them.

The first wall of the coop is framed. Note the proximity to my neighbor in the back. Fortunately this guy has loud parties and a fire pit on his raised wooden deck. So we're guessing he won't be saying anything...
