Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

not yet, yet being the keyword. I am building the fence in a few weeks to keep a goat, and plan on getting some long tails (onagadori, sumatras) to keep in there too.... did i post pictures of the aviary i finished?

You have such beautiful birds - do you sell the feathers? Seems like you could keep quite a few hat-makers happy! And I guess fly fishing lure makers happy as well. Seriously though, you go on etsy.com and there are lots of headbands, necklaces, etc. sold there all the time. I love the feathers my easter egger drops, they are prettier than anything.

I disappeared for a bit into spring break plus everyone is sick land. Yea for germs! Plus my oldest developed an ear infection for the first time ever, because what would vacation be without a trip to the doctor? *sigh*

Al did you see the quote about Putnam county being the healthiest county in NY State? Tell the truth, you can dead-lift twice your weight without breaking a sweat, right?

Other random questions, does anyone de-worm their chickens regularly? My hens seem fine but my sister in law's dog eats their poo and has gotten worms twice already. Since we are getting a puppy next month I am looking to cut off the cycle in advance. Any thoughts? Do you have to go with ivermectin?

I wormed my hens because I saw worms in their poo, I think they were cecal worms. My hens were treated with panacur and I believe had bad reactions to it. They got all sleepy and weird, to the point where they couldn't even open their eyes, it was scary there for a few days. All made a full recovery. I don't believe the worms that are in chicken poo can affect dogs (least that's what my vet said).

Here is a little info on cecal worms…

Cecal Worms
The Cecal worm is a common parasite of backyard poultry flocks. As the name implies, the cecal worm inhabits the cecum of the bird. Cecal worms cause little or no damage to chicken flocks but the cecal worm can carry the organism that causes blackhead disease in turkeys.
Earthworms ingest the infected cecal worm egg from poultry litter; turkeys that consume the earthworms become infected with the blackhead organism. Turkeys can also become infected with the blackhead organism from direct oral contact with the infected cecal worms. Turkeys and chickens shouldn’t be housed together and turkeys shouldn’t range where chickens have ranged.
Leviamisole and Ivermectin are both effective in the control of cecal worms, though both require a veterinarian’s prescription for use in poultry.

Heather, they certainly didn't survey me! I think they tell us that to make us feel better for having made the choice to live here. At one time we were the safest county also.

Hope you guys can get over the spring break illnesses soon. Lots of sinus problems the past few weeks, especially with all the wind stirring stuff up.

We have never wormed out chickens either. Some people do it twice a year as a matter of maintenance. I have never seen worms in their poop, but then again I didn't use a microscope. I figured as long as they are in good health and continue to lay well that they are alright. Still, I wish there was a general rule for worming on a regular basis. Kind of like having shots for our dogs.

I left Laura in charge of locking up the chickens last night. She got home from a firefighter training class at 10:30 and left me the following message: "Those are some well-trained chickens. I just got home and went to do a head count and all six were upstairs in the coop, ready for bed." So proud of ALL my girls!

We have a beautiful room in AC, looks out over the water. No big wins yet, nor big losses either. Up with the chickens this morning, heading down to breakfast. Then a walk on the Boardwalk. (In the direction of Dunkin' Donuts!)

Still looking at chicken pix, even on vacation...

Gotta love chicken instinct. How many other pets can get into bed at night and tuck themselves in? Wished our kids could have been that easy. Have a great time. If you win, remember, that translates into more chicken buying power. :)

I'm with you, Al. I've never seen worms, so I haven't wormed them. Of course, I haven't been at this chicken thing very long. Once in a while I see some runny poop, but I write that off to something they ate. I hate to take unnecessary medications, don't give it to my dog or cat, so I kinda feel the same way about the chickens.

They were testing the fire alarms here during breakfast. For about an hour. We paid the check and Bobby said, "Let's get the flock outta here!" Uh oh. Now he's making chicken jokes!

Took a nice walk along the boardwalk. It's a beautiful day here. I'll post a picture or two once I get off my fat lazy vacation butt and download them.

Today's giggle: I got an email reminding me that the chicks will be arriving on or about the 12th. Like I needed reminding! *striking forehead with the palm of my hand* "Oh yeah, that's right, I have some chicks coming sometime..."

Now I really am looking forward to getting the chickies! Mrs. Cuddlesworth appears to be broody, not confirmed yet but seems so! Little does she know that her dream to be a mom will actually come true again soon!

Ok so no sweating worming the hens just now. I cleaned up some droppings and looked at them but didn't see anything to be afraid of. It's not really worth spending the time and $ at the vet to worm them. Just praying the puppy doesnt eat the poo. Hope you're having fun at the beach! Can't wait to meet you guys and pick up my chicks. Anyone have a chart for all the breeds we're getting with pics?
