Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Does anyone watch the Cobert Report? If so Did you see the show April 17th when he talks about chickens being given prozac and caffine along with a long list of other things pretty scary.

Anyone going to the poultry show in CT this Sunday.Wanted my husband to take the ride take the ferry over drop him off at the casino and come back for him but he doesn't want to. Think I'm going to go. I have never been to a show. Can yor buy chicks there?

husband has to go to a fireman's wake out there tomorrow if he gets off juiry duty early enough.. A work partners brother had a heart attack at the scene of a fire. Thought I'd make the trip with him but wow....now thats a ride from where I live on the southern tip of staten island.

It's like exit 62 on the LIE if you want to know...and yes, it is a trip for you.

I'm going.
Will get 2 BO's for Carolyn252.
There are supposed to be quite a few people with chicks.
Silkies, and Orps mostly.
If anyone else is interested, I have contact with them on Facebook, but have to wait til tonite.
No access at work.....

I wish more peeps were available right here without going over a major bridge.......even fertile eggs for a broody would be nice to "just pick up". nearby. sigh.............. I have 3 incubators but really no energy to set them up and tend to them now. Geez......i might be burnt out..............lol. now I have the space and simply no desire to hatch and house till they can go outside. :(

I had a whole post written and forgot to hit submit! UGH! Well, it went something along the lines of this…

Thanks Suzanne for the compliments, we love the place we have chosen to call home. It's been a labor of love for the past 3.5 years.

So glad you got to see Mrs. C at her best. So cute when she came down the plank and looked right into their faces as if she was trying to really talk to her chicks.

Your coop is looking fantastic, can you send Bobby over here when he's done? LOL!

I talked to a woman today who is in publishing and she loved my illustrations but not the story. She thought it was too long and kind of disconnected I guess. So it's back to trying to rewrite the book. UGH! Here is the cover in case I haven't showed it yet. I can't remember anymore!

These illustrations are adorable! I love them! As someone with a 3 & 5 yr old (18 mos. apart), I can recommend two things for a kids' book: make it from their perspective, i.e., make the star the babies, and make it rhyme. Reading the same book over and over again gets pretty tedious unless it's somehow easier. Something about rhyming makes it better on the one doing the reading.

The tool idea is a great one. Fess tools are super well designed and come in cool storage cases that sort of lock together, as my friend Cheryl says " like big boys legos". They are the brand of choice around here. My husband and son are finish carpenters and make custom furniture and cabinets. And a very fine coop--which is incomplete...

I third the tool idea. If you can't buy him actual tools, what about a gift card? Or - get him his fishing license for the season and a new pole.

So hi, yeah, I've been laid low by the massive amounts of tree pollen out here. I haven't been productive really just staggering around like Frankenstein's sneezy, congested bride. Yesterday I actually managed to get lost on the way to the kid's preschool that i've taken them to every morning since September. Don't ask.

The Welsummer chick is doing very well - too well! (If the zombie attack comes I'm going with Delawares and Welsummers for sure). She's practically flying, and I had to put a screen over the top of the brooder box. I thought the Faverolle was doing ok too, just not feathering out as fast. This afternoon I found her hunkered down napping again, under the light. All day yesterday it was too hot in there, now that I put the screen on it got too cold. So I took the screen off, and swapped out the regular 100W bulb for a red heat lamp. She was still not responding though so I gave her some 1:1 black strap molasses: water with an eye dropper hoping that a little sugar would help her get going. An hour later and she was still really lethargic. I gave her some more sugar water by beak and some plain water, and watched to make sure she was ok, i.e., I didn't drown her. She's still going but definitely not as perky and fast as she was even yesterday. The Welsummer is being good to her and huddling near her and cleaning her fluff of any wood chips that stick to her. Is there anything else I can do? She pooped on my hand when I first picked her up and it was a little loose but not total diarrhea.

I am also in the process of worming my three older girls with Wormazole. Keeping them in the coop all day until the last hour or so before bedtime, and giving them extra treats like oatmeal, milk, meal worms, etc. I haven't noticed any worms coming out in their poo but as of today (2 days after I dosed them) there was some diarrhea. I didn't have any reason to believe they were sick other than my sister in law's dog getting worms twice but it's not clear that he got them at our house. I'm not sure he even eats the poo, I just know he likes to roll in it. I have reasons to suspect the dodgy puppy store across the street from her apartment building more, you know all their dogs are coming from puppy mills. Should I bother doing the second dose next week? I really hate throwing out the eggs, drives me crazy. I'm also not composting the poop I collect right now, figuring that it might be unsafe. I also found a dead vole in the coop yesterday, the day after I dosed them but have no way of knowing if it's connected. It was making a nest under their feeder, which has happened in the past. It didn't have any injuries other than a little mark on its front paw, and when I held it out in front of the chickens they all took off like I was holding a live tiger. I doubt it was them. Of course now I'm paranoid that the vole was poisoned by something and that might get into their systems too. Gah!

Tomorrow I'm attempting to plant the garden, looks like we're finally out of the freeze danger. I need to get some mylar balloons to put on the low chicken fence so that piggy-pants J. Lo doesn't go in there. She's the one that is most often led astray by her appetite. Tonight I found her trying to eat the asparagus through the bird netting. The wild birds also seem to be attracted to the tilled dirt too. Lordy.

Any advice for the chicks & the worming welcome - thanks!
