Yikes. I must be a terrible mom. We have a "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy around here. Of course, my daughter IS older than I was when I became her mom...

I moved one of the nesting boxes off to the side and filled it with shavings in the hopes the April/May chicks will use it to sleep. One of them did hop right in to check it out.

And of course when I went in to collect the eggs a big girl was on the nest and two of the April girls were on the big roost.

Sometimes I think they sit up all night discussing ways to drive me crazy. (Don't drive, it's a short walk.)

Sorry everyone I just woke up. I am in the process of knowing her. Her dad seems to be a sensitive subject, So I dont push it yet. And her name is Sarah.

I have similar integration problems. The three year old girls believe that the coop is theirs, and they allow the fourth of their age to have her chicks in there, the chicks are four and a half weeks. Her previous brood is a pair who are sixteen weeks old. There are three who live currently in a small separate coop who are ten weeks old. Things are fairly benign during the day, except everyone tries to eat the pulverized chicks food before the poor chicks can get it. And the other big rule is Everyone must run away from anyone who is older.

But at night...the big three used to roost all close to each the to the left of the door. So I encouraged the teens to roost to the right of the door. Mama didn't like that because they were above her and the chicks, and they watched them. As things settled down, the big three decided that one of them would stay to the left, and two would take over the spot to the right. Mama still didn't like this arrangement, but those teens decided to roost on the top of the door which opens in. I relocated them to a central area, but then found them in one nest box and Mama and the chicks in another. Each night is a new arrangement, can't wait until the Tweens get into the mix. Or when Mama stops taking care of the chicks...I added a curtain, and shake out the carpets from any nest boxes occupied overnight. What next?
