Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I can't even let my chickens out anymore they're so bad! During day I'm shooing them like flies! They take chickens right in front of me...so brazen! Time to take down trap. No relocating; against the law here. Besides, you gotta go pretty far and they're not paying for my gas! Always like this in the spring but especially brazen this year.

Wow. During the day? I'd call the animal control people and report them as rabid. Even if they aren't. Let the Town handle it.

Today is the last full day of school. Tomorrow and Friday are only half-days. More mayhem packed into less time.

New t-shirt idea for Donna:

CHICKEN SHIrT
All sorts of hysteria in the coop this morning. "What are these chicks doing in here?"

We're going to try this pepper spray Dan read about online. If that doesn't work, he's buying some traps and a rifle. The Raccoons are EVERYWHERE. I hear them fighting every night, and I'm tired of them scaring the bejeezus out of me at 2am. When I pull into my driveway from picking my daughter up from work at 10pm, they're on my front porch!

My daughters last regents is today, both middle sons are done with school, and my little guy still has 3 days left. Today is crazy hat day. I wonder where the school expects us to get these hats from. Maybe I'll just make him one out of paper and glue. if I send him to school with a gag gift hat I got for my husband, they'll probably send him home. It's a Guinness baseball hat with a bottle opener in the bill. I like it. I doubt the school will share my sentiments.

Today is supposed to be 97 here. I'm thinking beach, maybe after I get my propane and oil delivery. (and lay out 1000.00 cash dinero for it) I know the boys would love to go to Smiths Point to surf, but I am not driving all the way across the island to get there.

Tomorrow is supposed to be equally bad in temperature, and my daughter has the senior Prom with her Boyfriend. Her hair appointment is at 11am. Hopefully they'll put enough hairspray in it that it won't look like "Jungle girl" by 5:30.

This is what my daughter calls "First World Problems"! Her boyfriend's little sister is going to the prom tonight. Same issue with the hair. But her dress is like a full length bikini, so at least she'll be cool enough! (Don't get me wrong. I love the kid - beautiful, sweet, talented.)

I keep thinking about how my girls will weather their first heat wave. Plenty of water all around. Thank God my yard stays cool with all the trees around. It's a b**ch in the fall, but great in the summer...

I'm worried about the girls too. I'll probably add ice cubes to the waterer a few times today, and keep the water in the hen house, where it's dark and cool. I have loads of trees and shade too, so I'm hoping they stay comfortable.

My daughters dress is full length, with a multilayered bottom half. She's gonna have to bring her deo with her to reapply.

I'm hoping it just stays clear-no thunderstorms cropping up until they arrive at Flowerfields at least! (The school is transporting them there! I'm SO glad they did that-relieves the mind of any misbehavior on the way there!)

Been busy gardening and such when I get home from school. Tutoring is pretty much on hiatus for now, although two of my clients want to continue through July and August, etc. Also got a call from a girl I tutor SAT with - she's got a client for us, starting in August.

I've had all the girls outside for the last few afternoons. The babies were so stinky, I put them in a dog crate in the coop. So now I have three separate flocks. The big girls are up on the roost, the little girls have gone back to their cozy corner and the babies are in the dog crate. Oh, why can't we all just get along?? I guess sooner or later, when they all get used to free-ranging together, they'll mix. Or not.

I'm going to take pictures of the babies. I think 2 of the 3 Light Sussex are roos, and the only White Orpington also. But one of the Light Sussex looks like a pullet to me (at least in comparison to the other 2) so after all that I still got a girl. That puts me at 11. I think I should have an even dozen, don't you? Exchequer Leghorn? Coronation Sussex? White Orpington?

I've been on an emotional roller coaster lately. I don't know whether to be sad or happy that the year is finally over. I'm terrified of doing nothing, but excited about the possibilities of free time. I just ordered like 6 quilt patterns from Grit, Bobby's going to teach me to play the piano, and I just found the hands-down cutest crocheted chick pattern of all time. (Heather, I found a nice set of egg cozies, but need to tweak the pattern/yarn combo. I want them to be perfect!)

I also took a book out of the library. My mother recommended it. It's called "Life, Love and Elephants". Now if I could only stop falling out of the hammock, I'd be all set..
Hi Suzanne! What is that book about? Sounds interesting.

This sums up what today is like: my daughter relaxing on the couch with her chicken, daffodil.

Thanks for the advice, I ended up weeding for literally 8 hours instead - and I'm still not done. if I were a real farmer we'd all starve to death, lol. I am debating getting out there and finishing it this morning since it's going to be scorching hot the rest of the week but it's not looking good since I still can't see the floor of my office.

I have to show off my garden now - please all tell me it looks incredibly neat and tidy.

That's not even all of it, and I'm not all done as you can see in the last pic. I need to have a smaller garden next summer, I can't keep up with my ambitions. Plus this morning there were two adorable bunnies dust bathing themselves in the lovely fluffy spots that I created right next to my Moon and Stars watermelon seedling. So help me Jesus we are having fricassee if I catch them eating that seedling. I ended up going back out there half-way between finishing this post and a)hacking my black spot infected climber rose to the roots and spraying the heck out of it and the soil with organic spray and b) sprinkling Repels All granules everywhere. These are organic, stinky pellets that you can get that keep most everything away. I put a line around the coop too, heck, why not? Christine maybe you ought to try some of that, worth a shot. I also finally put up the solar blink lights which was incredibly easy I just had to get the wood screws and I rather like seeing them blink on. It's a reminder to me to make sure the coop is locked up because it's dusk out.
Oh beautiful! You just gave me some good ideas for mine. My zuccini'squashes are flowering like mad and I already have 2 yellow and 1 green big enough to pick for dinner tonight.
