The state of NJ is trying to outlaw the selling/bartering/or giving away of any chicks under 2 months of age. Check out this bit of legislative hide and seek couched within the animal restraints in vehicles bill:
Prohibits:
q. Sell or offer for sale, barter, or give away living rabbits, turtles, baby chicks, ducklings or other fowl under two months of age, for use as household or domestic pets;
r. Sell, offer for sale, barter or give away living baby chicks, ducklings or other fowl, or rabbits, turtles or chameleons under two months of age for any purpose not prohibited by subsection q. of this section and who shall fail to provide proper facilities for the care of such animals;

The synopsis says:
"Establishes requirements for pet restraints in passenger automobiles for dogs and cats; establishes failure to comply with requirements as a motor vehicle offense and an animal cruelty offense."
Hmm, would one even think to read on, way into the document, to see that they are trying to prohibit chick transfer? I suppose that they can still be sold/bartered/given away as livestock, but you would think that might be a bit more cruel since most livstock ends up on a dinner plate or in dog food or as a battery hen. Geesh.
If you know of anyone in NJ have them call/write their reps.

I'm getting paranoid about Beatrice, my white Orpington. She's looking a little rooish to me.
She hatched 5/25 - just over 8 weeks ago.
For comparison, here's Leon. Same hatch date.
And Lavinia, who is also an Orpington, hatch date 5/1.
And the beautiful Lola, another Orpington, hatch date 4/11.
As you can see, I spent some time with the girls and my camera. And finally, with a nod to Sesame Street, here's today's photo entitled "One of These Things is Not Like the Others..."
(And no, it's not a giant Silkie!)

I'd be up for going on tues the 7th. If Richard lets me take the Volvo I can drive 4or 5 if the people in the back seat want to squish.

As for the quilt I think one made with traditional squares and chicken themed fabric would be nice. A queen size would be 4 x6 blocks (12 inch) plus sacking and border. There is very neat chicken wire fabric roaming around out there that would be great for the saching and back or a solid color saching and the chicken wire fabric for the border and back(probably better ) I'd have to see it set together.depending on the number of us working on it we could all choose one pattern and make 2 or 3 blocks. For example someone could choose "hens and chickens" block and make 2 or3 of the.i have 3 or4 books just on traditional and not so traditional blocks. I love sampler quilts made with tradional blocks. Yes I'm babbling. Like I need one more project. Please stop me I'm going to the fabric store to check it out.
