Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

I'm up toooooooo.
If anyone hatches out chicks, the Mareks vaccine is only like $20.
I have a bottle on order, and can buy another as a backup.
Keeps in the fridge.
I think I may start vaccinating all my birds.
Waiting to see what this bug is.

Suzanne... She needs to rent out rooms. To the RIGHT people.
I know it's hard to think about. One of my friends is going thru a divorce right now, and will need a place to live.
I'm sure the good ones are out there.
Is there enough room for chickens in the yard?

Good morning all,
Suzanne sorry to hear about the craziness after such a nice weekend.
I'm certainly going to try and go to the Poultry show in January.i am going to the Vogue knitting show on that Friday then the mass show on Sat. I think I'm going to stay over then come home on Sunday . I'm going to check out hotel rooms this week.
Cleaning up the rest of the yard for winter this week.

Last year we stayed at the Red Roof, it was like $65.
I checked this year, the price has gone up to $114.
I *may* have put in the wrong dates.... need to check.
I stayed with a complete stranger (Mame1616) right here on BYC, and we have become the closest of friends.
Ain't it strange what chickens can do?

Oh, When I was at the vet on Saturday, I met another chicken in the waiting room.
I'm gonna try to get her mommy Sharon over here into the group.
Yay! more chicken peeps!

That's our CFG! Spreading the chicken love.

I'll look at hotel rooms too. I love doing that. Don't forget AAA and AARP discounts available to us old farts!

Today I was high on LIFE!
I went less than 1 hour away to a workiong farm ion Lakewood NJ with a animal/chicken buddy.
Good grief it would take me an hour to type what I found and saw there. My little dream place. From Emus to sheep and all inbe-tween.
3 hours later....yes 3 hours of the nicest one on one tour ....I came home with a beautiful Lav. Orp pullet(my choice of 2 troughs of 6-10 week olds) and feathers from every pea hen, rare pheasant, turkey and chicken I could find on the ground or buy. I will post the p[lace in a seperate message for ypour future reference.
6 mind you.....6 huge incubators for hatching eggs....eggs for sale of the different breeds for pick-up only...... and no hatchery stock at all. Nice fat healthy birds and just a joy for me to visit.
Chicken crack.....I was both overwhelmed and over joyed.

Shusters Farm. I used to live down there and it is was right by the place I used to clean stalls and herd horse turd to ride for free. Amazing.............absolutely a day trip for a Sunday(the ONLY day for tours) where you can pick them out and buy should you choose to. He has a buildong just for peeps in brooders.
On BYC and ebay as well. He mcares for his animals....really cares. Impressive.....and the care and attention was what will make me go back and back. No more shipped eggs for me!
He will hatch out egg breeds if requested, straight run but not in tiny numbers. He has those 350 count incubators and 6 of them.
3 generationson this farm and will take all my pure roos from now on should I need rehome them long as I tell him where they came from.
The emu and alpacas were amazing and sheep goats pet friendly. 4-H tours and schools alike go there.
Can you tell I am jazzed!!!????
I picked my lavendar orpington pullet from maybe 12 peeps offered at between 8-12 weeks old. Wonderful cause by then the difference between the roos and hens combs is just so obvious. Right now he has quite a number available but someone was also picking 6 hens this afternoon so I am sure that will change.
My friend took a turkey poult and a redish/golden polish which is likely a girl in my book. Gorgeous! we just controlled ourselves. eGad that was hard!

Did I hear POULTS? Oh I have to go there!!! It sounds like someplace they'd have to kick me out of to make me leave...

Can't decide if I love JubilleOrpingtons or not
I do. I love any orps, and the jubilee's are SO PRETTY!! Maybe in my next life as a lottery winner.
I would really, really like to do the New England Poultry Fair this year - or I guess next year, since it will be 2013. I'd love to meet some of the N.E. bloggers and of course hang out and talk chicken with you guys. Let's all try and put that on our calendars as a reward to us for making it through the holidays, yeah? We can even do a Yankee Gift Swap either serious or silly, regifting totally allowed. It would be nice to have something to look forward to, plus we need to keep Roberta from turning on the Mega Incubatron 3000 and hatching 200 eggs in the middle of winter and driving herself crazy.

So who's with me? We could even book a block of rooms for a group discount or something for that one night, carpool together, etc.
I'm not sure I'd be able to swing it with these kids and all their taxi needs...

I just won another CL auction. 9+ eggs from a
different breeder than the first ones.
I hope some of you are serious about wanting
CLs.

You can pencil me in for one!!
Okay, it's 2:40 am and I'm still awake. My beautiful weekend was shaken (if not stirred) by an ongoing "conversation" via email with my siblings about my mother's financial situation. It's long, it's complicated and it's ugly. Fortunately, my siblings and I are all on the same page, but it means dealing with my mother. We own 1/2 of the family home, which we inherited from our father. The other 1/2 is Mom's. She's all worried about running out of money but doesn't want to sell the house (which is a 6 bedroom Colonial in Baldwin, complete with killer taxes and huge heating costs). We're all struggling ourselves financially (hello, unemployed here) so we can't help out. Every six months or so some snake oil salesman or Robert Wagner convinces my mother she should take out a reverse mortgage, which of course she can't, and then we go round and round this for a couple of weeks while she bemoans her inability to make this decision for herself because we own 1/2 the house. There's more to it than that, but I'll spare you.

After a whole day of emails all around NY and NC, I'm so sick of the whole thing, I'm going to drive there right now and put a *&^%ing "For Sale" sign on the place. Or a Molotov cocktail.

Anyone ever read "The House of Sand and Fog"?

Thanks for letting me vent.

I'm definitely in for an extended road trip to Springfield in January. And, Heather, any Sunday you want to round up the girls and go to the farm in NJ, give me a shout. I'd love to do that!
I'm sorry about your mom's situation. It's so hard to deal with that stuff when you have your own row to hoe. If ya need a shoulder or an ear-you know how to find me!!

YAY! Isn't it funny how many people are CHICKEN PEOPLE? I'm finding them everywhere.

I picked up three more books from the library and two of the ladies there came over (i had them on hold) and one of them said, "we have to ask, do you have chickens?" I said no, but they are on the way so I have been doing my reading. They got very excited and told me how they all got my book in the other day and had been flipping through it and how pretty the chicken breeds looked and the gardens etc etc....I spent an extra twenty minutes just chatting about chickens. I encountered the same thing at my doctors office waiting room while reading one of the books and at my sons school. I am surprised at how interested people are, I have gotten used to my friends looking at me like I am crazy, but amazingly I have found lots of interested people. I even found someone in my town who keeps chickens already and sells the eggs and fresh local honey. Yum!

The coop is still being rehabbed, there is just the one wall left to fix, then we need to try and move the entire thing (so not looking forward to this part). My husband keeps finding more surprises and work to do. After that last wall is done and it is moved we can start on the ventilation, nest boxes (using an old dresser for this), and the windows/doors. In the meantime my DH brought home 7 pallets from a job site....for me to play with for a second coop lol ..or a solitary confinement coop.

Thanks for answering my questions earlier :)

Blue eggs sound awesome....I ordered easter eggers with the hope to get at least some color variety. I seriously can't wait for them to get here ! I did end up with the ecoglow brooder...it arrived last week (which made me want to run out and get some chicks right then and there), I also got the incubator and candler as a surprise gift from my husband....the incubator looks so tempting but being so new to this and only having classroom experience....I will leave it alone until spring. I just want to test it out. Does anyone ever incubate only seven eggs? I was kind of concerned with getting only seven eggs shipped...that I might end up with just one chick....but now that I know there are local farms in long island...I might just go buy some eggs locally (Thanks for sharing that info).

Well I hope everyone has a better week moving forward, this weekend seemed to bring a lot of sadness to some. Best wishes and Big Hugs!

P.S. I went to a birthday party this weekend, and stopped to pick up a bottle of wine for the host, ofcourse I got my regular wine, some beer for the guys, and as I was leaving I noticed a bottle with a rooster on it....my husband saw it later and just laughed at me :P He thinks I am such a dork
