Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hi all, spent the weekend in CT with friends celebrating my best friends birthday at Foxwoods. Had a blast playing bingo ..didn't win but had fun. I brought up that wool festival to a friend who loves to knit and we might go ...only problem is we have two parties that weekend we are invited to...one of which is in Long Island so we may have to skip it . I want to go to a poultry show sooo badly though too! I am so glad I was away this weekend because I was getting crazy waiting for my chicks.... I keep thinking they will be born in the next twenty four hours....yay yay. I am trying not to get too excited so that if disappointment comes I am prepared. My husband has been totally awesome through it all. He basically has accepted that I have gone a little crazy for chickens. He took care of the kids while I was away and even worked on the chicken coop ..yard etc. all the chicks supplies is purchased and waiting. What do you guys store your feed in? We keep our pets food in these awesome containers but I can't seem to find them anymore. Originally I got them at pet I I think...they are thick plastic containers with lids that screw on and seal. At michaels crafts I found chicken recipe boxes and notepads for $.50 and thought they would've cute little gifts for people with a dozen fresh eggs. I picked up a few of the recipe card boxes for next year. They had a huge clearance section in the paramus nj store and the checkout girl said it was a new markdown so checkout your local one if you like :)

Have a great holiday today :) hopefully this week dries out and we get some nice autumn weather.

I love those Michaels markdowns! And I used to have those pet food containers. You're right - they were awesome. I only got rid of them when my Labs chewed through them. They were a handful, those two! I searched for them. They are called Vittles Vault and they have them on amazon.com.

Glad you had a great weekend. Chicken crazy. We have no idea what that's like!

Just found the Gamma Vittles Vault on petmountain for about $32. 50-55lb. storage. I had forgotten about these. They are excellent. I think I'll get 2 - one for feed, one for scratch. If anyone else on LI wants to order, we could get free shipping.

Thanks for reminding me, Sally!

Yep those are them, thanks for finding them....my coonhound mix is a chewer also...she is crate trained because she would eat our wood furniture until she got sick. She would lay in our gazebo and chew on the wooden swing legs as a puppy. She ate our linoleum floor once...you get the point .

I just use those rubbermaid thingies, don't remember the quart size, but they hold exactly 100 lbs of food.
They stack well, I use 3 at a time, so it lasts for a couple weeks. sigh.

My labs ate my linoleum floor also! Now I have a little froo froo dog who's not a chewer. She does, however, have to lie across my stomach while I'm doing my situps. She's my exercise buddy.

Oh yeah. And the labs chewed on the arms of an antique rocker that's been in my family for 4 generations. Don't tell my mom!

It amazes me howtheydo such naughty things and manage to look so innocent. We thought we could let our one girl out after she grew out of the puppyhood.....maybe the chewing was just a phase....so we are sitting in the kitchen playing cards and she is tucked by are feet...suddenly we hear a scrape..crunch type of noise....look under the table and she was chewing the leg of the table.....no reason...it was there and apparently looked tasty. She isn't the brightest but she is such a loyal dog and we can't imagine her not being around.

Roberta, how many chickens do you keep? I'm wondering the rate of food I should be keeping in e house so I don't need to runout for food that often.

Um.... six.

That's the legal limit.
However, chicken math has gotten the best of me.
Somewhere between 6 and 200, pretty much right smack in the middle.
Unless you are from the town. Then I have 6 hens.
