Southern NY, Dutchess county and below

Hi everyone,
It is good to hear that some of you have gotten some progress in the power, and trees removed way. I am wondering if it might not be a good idea to consider retreating to a mountain top, instead of an island. It seems that islands are near water, and that is what has caused a lot of this problem. Also, if one considers relocating, central NY is pretty safe. Not much in the way of hurricanes, tornados, avalanches, tsunamis, or earthquakes. We did have that one micro burst, and Binghamton area has had a terrible time with floods. We do get lake effect snow, but that is kind of pretty. And we make wine here. Traffic is minimal, too. And lots of room for chickens.
But since that is not really what anyone wants to think about really, I want to tell you from the bottom of my heart, I am inspired by your willingness to reach out to others, and help friends, family and strangers. You are a really amazing bunch of wonderful people.
At the Red Cross training, they showed us that they have supplies to help people who need them with cleanup. There is this squarish bucket that has work gloves, rubber gloves, pine Sol, a mop with the handle that screws together, and a bunch of other stuff I can't remember. The red cross just helps people who need help in a variety of ways, food, shelter, and stuff like the cleaning supplies. They have vehicles which carry food to people who are unable to get out. To me it sounds like a small amount of help when there is a huge need, but I guess if there are no options of ways to feed oneslf or be warm and dry,it can make a big difference. To get back to normal will take time, and lots of work. Red cross also has comfort kits, with tooth brushes, combs toothpaste, shampoo, soap, the real basics.
If you come across people who need those very basic things, tell the red cross, they want to get to those people.
I am praying for all of you. I would love to take care of that drooly newf for you! We have a newf, but minimal drool, dry mouth. Love the dogs, but they do make housekeeping more challenging. Could you do some nail clipping to save the floors?
Thanks so much Glasshen, but the newfie isn't any trouble, it's the collie mix who is a pain in the arse. I kicked him off the couch earlier and he growled at me. Talk about an ungrateful guest!

Hi Everyone.

Our power was restored yesterday at around 5pm. A team from Michigan spent the day on our block. I am enormously grateful to them, on behalf of Bobby and Laura. Me? After the power came back on I was doing the same thing I was doing in the dark, only with the lights on. Crocheting.

Donna, how can I help you? I'm practically around the corner. Would breakfast or lunch or coffee away from home help in any way?

Heather, make some noise! Call Mr. Mayor and ask a few pointed questions. I try to be disarming, saying things like, "I don't understand what the problem is." and "Is there something I can be doing to move this process along?" (like bribing the Mayor). But keep calling. They'll put the power back on just to shut you up.

I have a box of items I was going to donate to the Disabled Vets, but I'm going to take it, and some more stuff, to Laura's firehouse tomorrow. They're having a drive for the victims of Sandy. I figure that's something I can do during the rain/snow/wind today - put together some donations. If I weren't so financially hard up myself, I'd go buy some supplies, but as it is I can draw from my stockpile of shampoo, razors, etc.

It's a good day to give blood too. I'm O- so blood banks love me.

Stay safe in this latest storm...

YEA for you!
My dh has O - blood and gives every 53 days or so....what ever the limit is. I go to but not as often because I so fear needles and its all I can do not to faint.

Same here. We were looking out the front window at a branch that came down and saw two blue flashes with big booms. Transformers, I bet.

Still have the lights on. We just need to get through tonight!

95 squares completed. I live for crocheting...

Coming next week: locusts.

Just lost power. Gah. At least chick has her momma
to keep her warm. Wrapped a quilt around my fish tank.
Gosh I hope they don't die.

Tina , I have a small incubator all clean and ready to go . I can't remember if I mentioned it . Next time I get to my sisters (or she comes down) I can get it as far as Cornwall. It holds about 30+ eggs and I have the rotator for it.I've had good success with it. Last year my girls hatched on Thanksgiving . If I were to do it again I would start a little later. Id love to go in on eggs with you if you'd like.Id like to give myfriend Loretta 2 little girls. She's the one that lost 8 girls to the fox last month.

We have such a bitter cold wind with this snowstorm, that I am terribly concerned for all the families who are still out of power. I wish there was something I could do to help. I just can't imagine how people are coping with a second punch from mother nature.

Carol, If I can locate some eggs, I would really like to borrow your incubator. Are you thinking of chicks or young birds for Loretta? Sensational Silkies by Blake just had two pet Sikies up for adoption, but they were taken before I could reply. I thought they might have been nice birds for Loretta. I'll keep my eyes open if any others come available.

What do you expect you crazy woman, you're not losing it, youre a mom.
Label a bucket "New Jersey Storm Relief Fund" and any time anyone asks you a question ,just tap on it. Before you start any lecture pass the bucket around. Bring it home and make a donation.
Be safe your husband and daughter will be fine
They have several of those type of fundraisers going on out here. I wish I had seen your post earlier, I would have done so. Well, on a plane again tomorrow. It will be good to be home even if it is dark, cold, dirty, and devoid of perishable food.

Good Morning Peeps!
I am STILL awake from last night. Apparently Mother Nature has a problem with me getting sleep-the trees blowing around kept me awake and in a semi panicked state for most of the night. I have about an inch of snow outside, but more branches and ice all over the place.
It was one nasty storm. I was worried about all the people who have no homes due to Sandy, and now this? The thought is horrifying. I have been collecting for those in Breezy Point, and Staten Island. Danny's firehouse is delivering the stuff this weekend-so far tons of shampoos, soaps and coats. Some turtlenecks (which I know will help greatly) Long johns, and a few pairs of mens jeans (hope Hubby doesn't notice they used to be his-not that he'd begrudge them) My sons have gone through all their shoes, and we have 5 pairs of youth sneakers. I'm going into the attic today, and going through more bags. This is making me feel so much less cluttered! I am going to the store to see about batteries-maybe CVS will have D batteries-most often needed for flashlights.

I'm praying there's NO school today-simply because the roads are completely iced over, and the buses don't exactly have the best tires. Not that the kids need to stay home again, but it'd be nice to not have to keep worrying about THAT.

Ugh. I'm going to try to lay down again-the wind seems to have died down a bit, so maybe.....

Our power went out for a couple of seconds last night but came back on right away, thank God.

I spent the day going through my closets and drawers putting together items for the donation drive at HMFD today. Three bags of clothes, coats, shoes, sheets, towels and socks. I'm going to bundle up and head out to the garage to see what's in the school supply boxes. Books, crayons, games, etc. I also gave blood yesterday, although I had to get my doctor to fax over a note saying it was okay because of my pacemaker. Since I don't have money to donate or buy supplies, I thought that was something I could do.

I wish I had stuffed animals to include. I thought about going to Kohl's and buying some of those $5 stuffed animals they always have, but again money is an issue.

Lots of snow here, and it's still coming down. Someone sure ****** off Mother Nature!

Tina, if you go on the ravelry.com web site it has any knit or crochet pattern you can think of. It's a great site . Most of there patterns are free I'm terrible at emailing things to people from other sites.(blonde thing)
Stay safe
