I'm in East Islip if anyone would like to drive here and "road trip it" ...
Has anyone had success ordering from Meyer hatchery? They are taking orders for the spring and I was thinking of putting in an order for a few
I am only going to orderPullets.I'm tired of trying to rehome Roos. It breaks my heart to have to get rid of them. They have a nice selection to pick from.
Why am I even thinking of this, my husband will kill me.
Because you've gotten the chicken fever. It's incurable. It's driven by chicken math and a blinding ability to love clucky things. Welcome to the club. We have cookies.

I think I may have to meet everyone since I have to wait to see what my husband has planned for himself. I know he's going to be helping at his buddy's house in Breezy Point. The house didn't burn, but FEMA probably would have paid more if it had. They have to gut the whole thing and start from studs. I'm glad I married a good man. He stopped there yesterday and literally wept with the guy. I have to pack up some food, and water since there is nothing there. He's bringing a generator and gas-but I doubt the guy has anything he can plug into it anyway. If I can go with you, Roberta, I can meet you by the LIE, so you don't have to come all the way north to me. We can actually take my truck-it fits 9 people. (And it can give me a reason to clean it out...it looks like Hurricane Sandy had it's way with a sporting goods store in my middle and back rows...)

What can I bring to Carolyns? Let's all bring a nosh, so we can "picnic" there! What time is everyone going? Suzanne, I'm considering bringing some crocheting to do too, but I do love to play scrabble, even though I never do well, I love backgammon too. Actually I like most games. (And I lose at them all, so everyone loves to play with me)

Oh I'm getting REALLY EXCITED!!!! This will be awesome!

BTW, Heather-if you want to bring your kids, I can bring my little guy-he's 7 and loves girls, I can also bring an older kid to watch them...(Pick one, I have several) they all love little kids. (I'm pretty sure there's no school tomorrow...)

Rosie, now that I know you love backgammon as well as crocheting, we are going to have to schedule regular "play dates"!

I'm baking banana bread today, so I'll bring that. Plus whatever my little fingers throw together in the kitchen today.

Bobby is taking a class for CE credits for his optician's license today, so I'm looking forward to a nice day at home putting together my Hurricane Afghan. After I clean the coop and rake some leaves. Oh wait, the leaves are wet. I can't rake today. Right? RIGHT??

Donna, we can definitely carpool! Come here I I'll drive to Freeport. My little Civic gets great mileage.

Hi everyone... I have been missing because I was out of power for so long, then traveling for business in California until Thursday. Our power finally returned Thursday afternoon. Since I was out of town, and the power has been out, my hubby and daughter were staying with my stepdad since he has power. My hubby would check the animals and house 3 times a day. When I walked into the house on friday we discovered we had been robbed. They busted the front door and took all of our jewelry. I went next door to ask if they had seen anything, then returned to the house to meet with the policeman. I mentioned that my neighbors kid was a heroine addict and he decided to go over and chat with them. Well, in the time I was at their house and back to ours the kids had taken off. The policeman found a pile of "discards" under the carport (discards being any of my jewelry that was not obviously gold). So they called the kids and got them to return for "questioning" and arrested them. Then they fingerprinted my house. A few minutes later they found a hole outside with some of the better jewelry that they were probably saving to pawn later.

When I was next door my neighbor (the kids mom) looked at me and said "as soon as you left I went through her room because I just knew it was them". My heart broke for her. I cannot imagine having a child go down this route, let alone one that was a straight "A" student on a full scholarship to college. Never once did she say "not my daughter", "don't take her" etc, instead she was mortified at this and wouldn't look me in the eye and kept crying and then said "she needs to go to jail. I am so sorry she did this to you. She has been stealing from us too and abusing me.". Then her youngest, a boy of 10, who I just adore, says "I saw them go into the closet and pull jewelry out when you left before" and then he told the officer and put it on paper for him. I thanked Andy and then he broke down into a fit of tears that they had stolen everything that mattered to him and sold it for drugs. Then the police told them that they might have to put him in foster because they found drugs in the house. I volunteered to foster this kid if that gives you any idea of how much I like this kid.

Now, that said, I am still irked that they let this kid and her boyfriend stay at the house knowing they were still using, but how does a mother put their child on the street? I cannot imagine it and the mom and I had actually talked about it a few weeks ago. The boyfriend in the house is unacceptable though, but I am trying to forgive the mother for love of her daugher.

They broke my front door, damaged most of my jewelry, and we still have not found my mother's perfect carat diamond wedding band, several sets of earrings, and two of my higher end watches. My poor daughter is distraught that someone came into her room and was through her things and I want to kill someone. They had better never show their faces around here.

This is the damage that drugs do to people. For us it is just stuff, This family next door has been shattered. I am greatful that they didn't kill our dog or harm him in any way. He is trained to watch and bark, not guard, so I can't be upset with him either.

Sorry for the long tirade, but I just needed to get this all out.

My daughter's boyfriend has an older sister who has been going through the same thing with a crack addiction. His family is in turmoil and has tried everything. But his mother can't bring herself to put her daughter out, have her arrested, etc. etc. The daughter has a toddler (just under 2) and he is the light of the family's life. Unfortunately, they've been struggling with this for years. (Mike's father died from alcoholism.)

When I met Mike's sister, my heart went out to her. I guess being in recovery, I recognize the struggle. I pray for her every day. Lately, things have been better. She and her baby daddy rode out the storm with the family and were clean and sober and helpful.

I mention it because right now all anyone can do for this girl is pray. It is such a tragedy. I'm glad you got most of your stuff back, even though that doesn't help with the feeling of being robbed in the first place. What a truly sad story for everyone involved. Her mother has reached a point which most moms couldn't get to. That more than anything may help her daughter find her way back. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family and theirs.

Go to the closest pawn shops, or wherever you would get cash, and look for your valuables. They could be there.
I don't know how you can talk to the owner of the shop... but it would be a start.
Legally, he owns it. But maybe the police can use it as evidence...Something may be able to be worked out.

Hugs to everybody.

I have a 50mpg diesel, so fuel is not an issue, but it's a lil VW. I can fit 3 more, and us out easters can meet me and I can shuttle you in, or ?
Toxic, you in? I can take you.

As long as my day doesn't get any shiRttier, I will try to do this tomorrow.
Need to clean out 1 more coop, and kill 3 of my babies.
It gets a little easier after a while. But I still cry. This isn't supposed to happen.

We went to every pawn shop, jewelry shop, "we buy stuff" shop in a 40 mile radius. No one is talking. I am hoping the police can work out where they sold it since it is unlikely that they did it legally (we have a number of "junk" shops that actually act as unlicensed pawn shops under the guise of a "consignment" shop).

They probably have a dedicated "buyer".Hopefully the police will get them nervous.
I'm sorry you had to go thru this crap.
But it is pretty common right now. People are crazy.

I'm sorry for this terrible tragedy. I feel very sad for your daughter. My house was robbed June of 2006, it was my sons last day of high school. He came home to discover it. Went through ever piece of paper we owned. God knows what they were looking for. Took whatever was not nailed down including my grandfathers wedding band that I had planned to give Adam for graduation. Adam is named after him, and his birthday just so happens to have been their wedding day.
My little pug that we would keep separated when we weren't home must have given them a hard time as they were leaving the house. They put a bag of rat poison in the area we kept him in.For the first time in his whole life he didn't eat it.

I'm very sorry for everything your family has been through.

Geez Christine I can't even imagine.... I am reading this on my phone in Homegoods (hey they're donating to Hurricane Relief). Addiction is so horrible. Robbery also horrible. Wish I could write more but as mentioned I'm on the phone keyboard. Any chance you can come to LI on Mon too?
I am not bringing my girls. I don't have a chance to talk to adults when they are with me. I am planning on bringing something to eat, and just throwing this out there, one small gift under $15. We could do a Yankee gift swap for no reason other than we all deserve a present for what we've been through in the last week. I can't really bring myself to type out my own thing but I will share on Monday. What time are you all thinking? Can I aim for 12:30 - 1:00?
