Southern vs. Northern Speak

How about Oil, foil, or boil.

Some pronounce it oll foll boll
Others say Oil, foil or boil

In other words some pronounce the "i' others dont

Well, and there is different speak in different AREAS of the south also..

The funniest story I can tell is when a group of us from Texas went to Georgia (or Joya-ja) for Australian Shepherd nationals. One of the girls had an aunt living in the same town so she invited us over for a good ol' suthern dinnah.

They had beautiful property and we were commenting on even the pine trees and pine cones in Georgia were different than in Texas.

So we eat (and eat and eat) and she comes out and with her best Scarlet O'hara southern drawl .. says to us:

"Well, I hope yaaaa'll left some roooom for some piiiiiine ice cream."

We all looked at each other like "What the HECK is PINE ICE CREAM??"

But we were polite and said yes.

Shortly she comes out and says "Here's your piiiiiiine icecream."

A piece of PIE and some ICE CREAM.

PIE-N-ICE-CREAM .. the way she ran her "pie" and "and" together scared the *** out of us .. lol.

It was GREAT PIE-N-ICE-CREAM.. **snicker**

You will never meet better people in your your life, than Southerners. We try not to get in a hurry, always make sure you're invited in for supper and sweet tea, always have time to help somebody no matter how late it's gonna make you, etc. Yes, we do go to the grocery store to shop for cokes to put in our buggies. And Y'all, fixin to, gonna, wanna and MANY other words get shortened around here.

Oh, yes! How come, c'mere, and we drop all our 'g's. It is 'fer' not 'for', does anyone actually say 'for'? And sure is 'shure' not 'shore'.

Some of my FILs sayings, that came from his dad, a horse wrangler and true Western cowboy.

"My big stomach's chasin' my little stomach"
"My stomach thinks my throat's been cut"
(For some reason the all have to do with eating.... )

Bumpin' Uglies.... Don't ask, it cracks me up though.

He has a ton more, but I cant think of them all...
Oh, "he's as useless as teats on a boar-hog"
And if you say, "Bless her little heart", you can say any nasty thing about someone and it is OK.

I'm from southwestern Indiana, which is were we live now, and my husband is from northern Kentucky. We are only and hour away from his hometown. I usually have to translate for people around here. One thing he says that drives me nuts is the first meal of the day. You know, brefus. AAAGGGHHHH! I'm pretty sure theres a k and a T in breakfast. On the weekend it gets really funl. Then I have to translate drunk Kentuckian.

the funniest thing is my niece said a guy she works with from up north could never get use to the phrase here in the south of " mom and nem" ....well I thought I never say that untill one day I caught myself when I was asking my dil " is your mom and nem comming over" lol

You guys are great! I love the diversity in all of our accents!

Got a couple more...

Bless his/her heart... (usually followed by something rude, but we feel excused because we used bless his/her heart first)

Fixin' - Getting ready to do something
Fixins - Food

I also use...
Hankerin
Whoopin'
Quit your belly achin - usually comes out sounding more like Kwitcherbellyakin.

I don't like to say "shut up" to my 7 year old DD, so it usually comes out:
Hush Up
or
Shush-it which sometimes doesn't sound too nice coming out.

And when I'm really over it...
If you don't quit-chur cryin' I'll give you something to cry about!
