I work for an oilseed processor and have access to soybean meal. Is this a viable feed for chickens?

Solvent extracted 48% sobean meal that has been heated to neutralize the tyripsin inhibitors is the primary source of additional protein for poultry and swine feeds the world over.

You will no doubt soon hear about how the stuff is near poison from the holistic herbalists and the 'crats from the food scare industry.

Yup what they said...

I mix it into my feed sometimes...it is a cheap source of protein relatively speaking...nothing about protein is cheap. I don't like it becuase I prefer animal proteins for my birds but keep some aorund because it is so easy to mix in a little extra protein if it looks like the birds need it

I thought so. You are right, I was talking about solvent extracted soybean meal. We sell to Purdue Farms, Tyson Chicken and others. I just wasn't sure if this could be their main source of food or just used here and there.

I sometimes use soy meal in chicken feed too, but for purely individual personal non-conspiracy reasons related to sick kids who improved on a non-soy non-wheat diet, I'd rather not. At nearly 50% protein it can be hard to resist when other protein sources are low.

Diets high in wheat and soy (the basis of industrial chicken feed) need to be supplemented with methionine, usually resulting in the inclusion of DL methionine derived from petrochemicals.

Go for it.

Soybean meal provides indispensable amino acids; high in digestibility and low in toxic or undesirable substances.
Methionine would be the first-limiting amino acid in grain & soybean meal diets, but Lysine is likely to become the first-limiting amino acid if soybean meal is replaced by another plant protein supplement.

Soybean meal solvent 44% ---
89% Digestible Material (DM)
50% Crude Protein (CP)
84% Total Digestible Nutrition (TDN)

Soybean meal solvent 49% ---
90% Digestible Material (DM)
55% Crude Protein (CP)
87% Total Digestible Nutrition (TDN)
