soybean meal..

I was only asking if and how much soy meal I could/should use.

I know what you were asking. What you feed your chicks is up to you, entirely. My response to Neil Grassbaugh was because of his implication that anyone who chooses not to feed soy is somehow one of those snarky names he called us. Like we couldn't possibly have done in-depth research to come to our own conclusions while being a Republican farm girl (me). I don't think that my way is the only way and that anyone who would dare disagree should be called names. Sorry you got caught up in that little clash.

If you had a beef with Neil comment then PM him.

I think that is way to much but I don't know about the heated meal that you guys are talking about. When I worked at the feed mill we would run whole soy beans through the hammer mill and make our own meal. We went by recommendations made by the livestock specialist and 1 to 2 is way to much soy bean. As I remember it was somewhere in the 50 to 60 % protein range.

Soybeans that have not had the trypsin inhibitors neutralized may be OK for ruminants but for not for the monogastric farm animals. I don't know and probably won't research it. Raw soybeans are refered to as an "anti nutriant" in poultry, swine and humans.
Adding SBM to a balanced ration just to raise the crude protein level is counter productive. This was well explained in Chris09s post.

Wildflower, Where do you buy your organic feed? It is just not feasable in my area to feed organic feed, as there is no local source and shipping it in is not an option for most poultry keepers of any size. I too need to up my protein content, and have a hard time finding feed that is not medicated in some form or fashion. I am using whole grains and chick starter, but it is very expensive as well. Using products such as cat food cost even more. I have no access to fish meal, what is the next best option then, as the OP asked? Thanks. HenZ

That's the main reason I will use soybean meal. I can get it at almost no cost. The price is right.

Lazy J Farms Feed & Hay :

Why do you think you need to increase the protein content of your feed?

Isn't feed too low in protein. If you cannot do much free range, shouldn't you supplement?

I just bought my first bag of soy bean meal and I was really suprised at the cost it was over $20.00 for 50 lbs, that is from our feed store, I live in the middle of ne and ideas where I could get it cheaper?
