Space managment with game breeds

Well, if you are looking to buy game breeds, in my experience hatcheries are not the way to go. I have had "game" breeds from hatcheries, and they were anything but pure... The hard part about raising games, is having space to raise them. That is why hatcheries can't offer good stock. As others have said, they have to concentrate on quantity, and with games, you just can't do that unless you have a big ol pole barn full of separate breeding pens...he he. Anyway, if you do get some that look like they are supposed to, but are not game, they aren't what they are supposed to be, so you still don't have pure ones. As for keeping game birds, all I can say is buy good stock from a reputable breeder, and start building pens now, and plan on building 10 times as many as you think if you plan on breeding them!

wow so i havn't been on in a while you guys really went on with out me, lol. Where to start, Acctually I have head injury and a program trough the local srs office was going to help me start my own business so I wanted to breed a few of my favorites with hopes of making a living off of it, but sounds like I'm going to sell in such bulk that all the enjoyment would be sucked out of it. Plan was cut off for now anyway. I'm going to try to find a place where I can hatch as a hobbie still but I think I desided I'm going to try Black Tailed White Japs and Standard Buff Cochins first hopefully I can grow eventually and have more. Right now I'm having a hard time finding a place big enough and with ordnances that will let me have birds. But It looks like for now it's going to be for my enjoyment.

My local auctions only require and approved "pen" and pullarium test (freinds with the tester) depending on the auction assuming things havn't changed (a beer box from the liquer store dumpster with little straw or pine shavings and some chicken wire to cover fastened with a few hog rings) would pass for a load of shooter pigeons or a doz. or so 4 or 5 week chicks.

Well this thread is old now and don't think it get much traffic but here goes an update.... Sad to say my great g-pa I mentioned past away at 93 about 2 months ago. My bird keeping isn't going anywhere right now I have 0 birds and cooped up in a 1 br apartment but 1 day if I ever get a farm I may snag onto some of the birds I mentioned just to behold their beauty and maybe sell a few chicks. Right now I'm looking into a handfull of house quail just to feed the itch to hatch. Will always love the birds and if I every get the chance I'll snag a few for memory, heritage, and beauty. Thanks for all the coments and if anyone stumbles back on post a few pics of your longtails and/or games.
